Contenders were my only hunting handgun for a couple of decades, but have been replaced by revolvers for the past few years. The Contenders in my safe will probably attract my interest again because they are such good hunters.

This one in 309 JDJ has taken many deer in it’s day.
I notice the rather generous brake on the .309. How is the recoil with and without? I'm thinking of a .30-30AI or .309.

The brake makes a huge difference, especially in hunting situations where you may be in an awkward position to absorb recoil. With the brake, the reduced recoil is straight back with little muzzle rise. Without the brake, the muzzle flips up to hit a window frame, limbs or whatever. You will however NEED to wear ear protection with a brake. I wear electronic earmuffs which enhance my poor hearing as well as protect what I have left. If I was buying another 309 Contender barrel, a muzzle brake would be mandatory.
