Is there a way to take it off, if it was to fail?? I know a guy that had to come in with the trolling motor still down because it failed and the only way to get it lifted, was to take the mount and all off the boat

Yes you can remove them. I saw where people remove it to route the trans cable down the groove. I am not sure but the only thing that I could see failing is the spring and like with a tape measure you should be able to force it back in. Just speculating...
