Headed west recently in search of quail. We hunted public land. The weather was fantastic. The birds were not plentiful but there were some there. The public land had been hunted a lot by this time of year. We put in some miles and found a few though. All in all it was a good trip. A few observations I've made over the years.
1) Hunting wild birds on public ground is always tough, no matter where you go
2) A long day can be turned around in an instant with good dog work and a clean shot on a single bird
3) Each trip, I make a couple of difficult shots that surprise me and I miss a couple of chip shots that leave me shaking my head
4) I carried 3 dogs. It is hard to have enough dog power when you go out of state and hunt 4-6 days. They get beat up
