Lake Level: -3.58ft below full pool (836.72)
Surface Temp: 48-51
Water Clarity: Clear/Stained

Have some crappie trips coming up so I was out searching the last couple of days.

The key to a successful crappie trip is stained water and there is plenty of it. Crappie & white bass are being caught in the mouths of creeks to half-way back in the creeks in 25-35ft of water. Long-lining 1/16oz Big Bite jigs & trailers in the black/green and pink/blue combinations has been the ticket. White bass & crappie are mixed together. Owl Creek & Kellogg Creek are producing.

Happy New Year Everybody!

See you on the water,
Rick

Great report and details Rick. Good catches also. I'm not familiar with long-lining for crappie/white bass can you provide a brief explanation? Perhaps similar to trolling? If not to complex I'd like to take my boat out with with the children for some Toona crappie and white bass too.

This is what I recommend for those who are beginners not familiar with long-lining and have limited crappie tackle and a jon boat/bass boat not rigged up with rod holders, etc.

Real simple:
Use 2 spinning rod-n-reel combos (1 spinning combo on the left side of boat and 1 on the right side of boat). Spool spinning reels with 6lb. Mr. Crappie HiViz line (Walmart). Cast 1/16oz jig 40ft behind boat. Troll between .4 to .8 depending on depth of fish. A good sonar/graph will tell you how deep the fish are.

Additional info:
You will have to experiment with jig colors. It can vary from day to day.
You will have to experiment with weight of jig and trolling speed. This is very crucial. You may have to add weight (small splitsshot, etc.) above your jig to get more depth.

Start with using 2 rods then as you have success add more rods.

Have fun!
