Are you fishing too much?

Ha! Excellent!

I haven't wet a line in over 8 years. But ya still got me!

How little spiritual matters of the heart have anything to do with outward practice. A man can forgo many seeming pleasurable things...and still covet them. But he will only know this when they are denied of having any value...by his reaction.

A man can indulge many seeming spiritual things...and still have a heart cold for the Lord. But he will only know this when they are denied of having any value...by his reaction.

That Pharisees loved long prayers (maybe as much as I have indulged long posts?) and Jesus said ...pffft, it all means nothing.

Paul took that understanding and expanded, faith to move mountains, giving one's body to be burned, knowing all mysteries...pffft...it all means nothing without the love of God, the love that is in God.

So here, when you ask "Are you fishing too much" and I am sure this could not possibly be a word for me (after all, I haven't wet a line in over 8 years!)...and sure that it is only going to hold someone else's feet to the fire...ha ha!

The very thought that you, who fishes it seems on a quite regular basis...might have something to say to me (who doesn't)...just shows me what remains of a certain leaven needing purging.

You have caught me...fisherman...before God thinking "Who does this guy think he is?!"

Well played brother.
Tight lines!

I think smug judgementalism is a big factor in making people flee in droves from organized religion, not what it needs to recruit people.

But, if he were a recruiter to organized religion (and it appears the assumption in the above that as one...he should "change his tactics") wouldn't that be subterfuge?

What if he's part of what is forbidden to practice subterfuge?

What if in being just as he is...he is driving folks from any notion of "organized religion" just as the above implies?

One might find out that this ain't no recruiter sitting in an office with A/C and a pressed set of blues, but a front line troop.

God knows.

If someone's tactics are "making people flee in droves from organized religion", it may be pertinent to ask who is he recruiting for.

Thought maybe I was the only one who saw the irony/duplicity of someone who chronically post's video's and pictures of himself fishing, preaching to other's about fishing too much.
Maybe I missed something,,,,he didn't come across as preaching to me,,,,

It's all too funny!
I mean...I have known all sortsa smart people (as no doubt many of you have), being in medicine for 40 odd years (as some of you are)...and come across folks that check out Einstein's calculations in their spare time.

And I have met some really smart folks on here, too. And, no doubt some that aren't half as smart as they imagine...(cause truly...even they themselves might be pressed to admit no one could be)

But a guy that posts a vid asking "Are you fishing too much" in front of his well used fishing boat...well he's either the dumbest and least self aware sort of person you could meet, or he's a lot less like a lot of the smart people I meet.

God knows.

I'll say one thing, the right one is asking the question. Maybe he's "been convicted" by the Holy Spirit.

Somehow I'm not quite convinced he's forgotten he has posted these. And probably without apology. I'm even convinced there were days he didn't "feel it", but because of commitment and his word, he went.

Can I be wrong? Well, ain't that a stupid question?

A return to the Andy Griffiths Show or Happy Days or Mash won't do. A return to protestant ethics and everything in moderation as old time revival will not make the times to renew. From the bottom up and then top to bottom... when salvation by work wont play, and salvation by play more or less... what's left? What does scripture say?

Proverb
At high tide fish eat ants; at low tide ants eat fish?

How little spiritual matters of the heart have anything to do with outward practice.

???? I would say spiritual matters of the heart have everything to do with outward practice. I understand superficially what you mean. We aren't governed by the Law. We have that freedom and realize there is no such thing as fishing too much, but the body doesn't walk in the opposite direction of desire, it walks toward it. If the heart is truly a heart for God, then it, like anything else, the questions like "Am I fishing too much." will never even amount to the level of a question to be raised, because it's not possible. A man whose sole mission in life is to swim the Atlantic, isn't gonna spend his time training camels. The fact that he ask himself "Am I spending too much time training camels." is a sure sign his sole mission is NOT to swim the Atlantic.
Am I fishing too much? Am I playing video games too much? Am I sleeping too much? All that is just worries about "training camels" by folks who may be truly concerned about their eternal destination, but: 1) are badly misguided or 2) not willing to make that full commitment due to the implications it would have on their comfort level so they virtue signal their devotion.

Jerry Clower once said in a message to young people "If you have to ask the question if it's OK to do something, that's a pretty good sign you are about to mess up" Pretty much same analogy here. If you have to worry about whether "doing this or that" is living in God's will, that's a good sign you ain't.

I just find it too funny that his thread gets bounced from the fishing section; deemed not a suitably topical fishing post and so gets tossed in the spiritual bin.

But it appears the writer never intended it for this forum. Or, if he did, was far wiser in seeing its ultimate disposition and its getting here than first motions would show. And now the fisherman finds himself in address to both the fisherman (did you notice how some followed after the bounce? and by his? the admin's? God's design?) is now perhaps watching (and perhaps waiting) what bread of his has been cast upon the waters.

But he may know how harvesting works more than he is given credit for, for he is either surprised (or not) that his bread seems less the concern than the one who has cast it.

But Michael does not strike me as a naif as though raising such a topic on a fishing forum could never lead to himself being bitten. God knows.

But that is the aim of every good preaching, a plain invitation to take a bite out of the preacher and see what consistency is there. If there is any? Does it match the bread? Is the man as thoughtful as he recommends? Does he serve what he himself refuses to eat? Is he just giving...offscourings...or himself? Counting himself as no more than sheep feed as need be?

It's only the false preacher who says there will be no suffering of biting of me for what I serve is of such exquisiteness any resistance or assault against my person in it is proof of unworthiness.

My favorite preacher said this while amongst those he spoke to in faith and hope that they might see their bread...and come eat.

Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him;

For the one speaking and His word are one.

I am convinced we will all see who is reconciled to being "served up". Both to his brothers...and by his brothers.

...just joking, seriously.
FYI-
Previous spiritual topics dropped into the fishing forum included 'how to tithe your fishing bounty' and the 'effects of watching too much porn'. Not fishing forum material.
I think we can look forward to more in here.
True, he drops some fishing vid's in the fishing forum, but as you can see, fishing is not his only subject of interest.
The rest of us drop our topics into the appropriate individual forums. He should have to play like everybody else.

How bout we seen a trend starting in the wrong forum !
After a group discussion amongst GON’s finest ! We decided to take action.
May I remind everyone about calling out moderation on the open board.

The rules are not open for discussion on the open forums. If you have issues or concerns or questions about a rule feel free to PM a mod or admin and as always your concerns or suggestions will be taken into consideration. Do not use the open forum to "call out" a mod or admin for implementation of the rules.

I wonder if I would have hit the same nerve had I discussed the same principles of moderation in a video entitled, "Does your wife shop too much?" Or do people only object when the cross hairs are on their own sacred cow or perhaps when they are jealous or just don't like the messenger?

In this same forum, not a single objection was raised when I discussed many of the same principles of moderation in the context of smoking pot.
The same nerve? It’s not a nerve.

It’s the hypocrisy of it coming from you. The guy that spends the majority of his time making videos and fishing. This isn’t the only site you do this on. You spend tons of time slapping those videos all over the Internet and they aren’t accepted in those places either.

The fishing forum is not a platform for your sermons.
