The very first thing I do with a new ramrod is to drill a hole all the way through each end, slide a brass rod a little longer than the width of the rod through the holes, and peen both ends.

I too had to learn the hard way.....

Patch puller on the left.....ball or bullet puller on the right.

Yes. As long as the projectile is soft lead the screw side should grab it. I pull minie balls with mine.
