7:18am heard a gobble 300+ yards away in a pasture. I’m on a hard wood ridge. I yelp to him and he gobbles again. Yelp again he gobbles again, I put the call in my pocket and turn toward the top of the ridge. I find a tree 25 or so steps from the crest. If he comes looking and peaks over he’s in range.

Well, like most birds do, he didn’t read the script. He circled the ridge and came in behind me. He saw no hen in the bowl between the ridge he was on and where I was. So he slowly backed out. I got a good look at him at about 80 yards.

I decided to not move for an hour and see what happens. About 45 min later I hear a gobble from the same pasture 300+ yards away. This time I turned the call behind me and up the ridge to make the hen sound like she was where he went earlier. Maybe this will bring him straight up the ridge to me????i yelped at him, He gobbled and gobbled and gobbled. I cut at his gobble and as I’m putting the call in my pocket he gobbled 5 more times. I know he’s coming.

Of course he doesn’t come straight to me. This time I saw movement very slowly in my right peripheral vision, he comes in from my right above me. Luckily I was able to move as he stood behind a large white oak at 50 yards. He was in a half strut with a bright bright glowing head coming through the timber. He slowly made his way to 36 steps. He now stood head up looking for the hen. That was his end.
Side note: his beard is super thick and twisted in 3 spots. Never seen that before.
