@Duff

I do my part to shoot every pig, coyote, and bobcat I see in this county. I think it helps the turkey. If I had a thermal on the .22 for coon, dillers, and possum........that'd be even better.
Todd…Thinking we should start a GoFundMe page to raise money for a thermal for your .22. I’d be all in. Pleased to report we have very few pigs on camera at the moment.

Back home from 3 days in the woods, was a wonderful time... Still seeing some rutting activity and let 2 real nice bucks walk, just not what I was looking for. But saw lots of deer and every hunt included some rutting activity. Had MYRX stop by camp and visit, always enjoy you GON buddies hanging out. We had 2 bucks and a doe taken over the 3 days I was in camp. Hunting is really good right now. Rut is not over by no means. Bucks are cruising looking for does still.

This weeks report " The Good, The Bad, The Ugly"
Good: I did see a very nice buck Monday, and I wanted to take him, he wasn't on any of my cameras. I saw a nice flock of turkeys Thursday, 17 that I counted. Saturday two Toms came by my stand. No Hogs on any cameras this week. Also watched 5 deer jump in the Broad River and swim to our property. Nice visit with Buford Dawg Saturday.

Bad: I waited too long for the perfect shot on the buck. I just was reluctant taking a 65 -70 yard shot at him quartering toward me at my age.

Ugly: The high winds Friday, Saturday and I overslept this morning.

Be out there tomorrow hunting for that buck, Lord willing.

What’s the deer density on the places you hunt in Oglethorpe County?

I’m convinced the deer density is reaching historic levels in our area based on the number of deer we’re seeing. Curious what you guys are seeing.

We don’t hear near the shooting we did 7 or 8 years ago.

AC, I really have no clue, not a deer biologist, however here is my opinion. The deer population is good on the couple places I hunt, one is a little better than the other. It is definitely higher the last 2-3 years than it was in the early 2000's thru 2020. It is not as high as it was in the late 80s and the 90s, those were the glory days of OC deer hunting IMO... I can't put a number on it, but I am happy at where it is right now, I know I can go to a deer stand and very likely see deer almost every sit. We do limit our doe harvests on our clubs so some degree, just not many taken as our members prefer to see deer versus sitting there not seeing deer. There were some years in the early 2000s up thru the 2020 where the seasons got long and deer sighting were way down due to overharvest in the county. As we know, OC gets heavy hunting pressure from both Atlanta (ME included) and Athens, I would bet there is not many counties in the state that get the pressure that OC does, so seeing the population where it is now sure makes me happy. I hope it stays for as long as I can hunt.

That's because me and my buddies took over that 700 acres touching you 3 years ago

Yessir…A fraction of the shooting we once heard over there. Kinda like the way you rolling.
I hunted it 2 years but didn't join back up this year. I kinda wish I had because it's so close by but I just couldn't justify the price since we lost 225 acres of it for the quality we were seeing. Pile of deer and I let a couple nice 3 year olds walk but couldn't lay eyes on or get pics of the kind of deer that gets me out of the bed

The past 3 years, our club has only harvested two bucks and one doe each season on 800 acres. Last year, you could count on seeing a deer every time you hunted. Not so this year. The lack of rain in October destroyed most of our plots, we had a very poor mast harvest, among other things, (including the 46 hogs we killed getting them off the property). A lot of does likely moved looking for better food. I did see a lot of 2.5 year old bucks however. I would say the property is just below carrying capacity for healthy deer population.

Thanks Brandon, appreciate it... Todd had also passed on the message yesterday. Hope all you OCer's have a great thanksgiving and if you get in the woods, hope you see and bust a big one. This is the first year in probably 40 years I have not hunted any of Thanksgiving week, we have our oldest son in town from Tampa this week so we doing things closer to home, was hoping to get him in the woods in OC as he has not been in a couple years, but it did not work out as planned. My trailcams have shown a steep decline in pictures this week, things are slowing down, gonna have to hunt food sources from here on out. And the nicer bucks will be nocturnal again, LOL....

Thanksgiving week:
Monday, I let another really nice eight walk, that came by me at 10:10 AM. Took three pictures of him. in case most of you don't know, I turned 70 this year, had heart surgery in March and I had a standard this year, "if its not going on the wall, it won't fall". Slept in Tuesday. Wed I hunted one of my food plots, saw a doe at 8AM, then a buck started chasing another doe in the hollow, below the plot, fun to hear and watch of which I only got three quick looks. At 9:40 a nice tall young eight walked across the plot. Very pretty buck, hope he makes it.

Thursday enjoyed the family. Very thankful for everything the Creator as provided.

Friday, hunted down by the Broad River, had more chasing at 8:10 with another I guess 2.5 year old buck. Then, I watched the Dawgs. Kids were at the game. Mine is a divided house as I went to Tech and GA, Most of my family went to Tech, except my daughter who graduated from UGA, Don't get me wrong, I am a huge Dawg fan. Well writing this now because I was up to late and enjoyed some Wild Turkey!

Will slow down now, and only hunt 2 days a week. Probably around my plots.

Good stuff! Fell asleep at half-time. After midnight, wife comes in bedroom shouting. Thought something bad had happened. She watched the entire game.

Sounds lie a full recovery on the heart surgery and still the motivation at 70 to hunt most days. That’s about as good as it gets.

68 and holy cow…the years are flying by. Enjoy the journey boys!
