3-1/2 inch marked barrel found to measure short

worked on a customers gun yesterday and found something you may want to check on if you own one

the gun was a New England Firearms single shot 12 gauge and on the barrel it was marked as a 3-1/2 inch chambered barrel

the owner said it had some serious recoil when he fired a 3-1/2 inch load
(think he only fired ONE)

decided to lengthen the forcing cone and install a Limbsaver recoil pad and before reaming i always check the factory chamber for reference before reaming the cone and found this chamber to measure 3 inches NOT 3-1/2

no wonder he said it kinda kicked a bit !!!

as when a 3-1/2 inch shell was fired in the gun, the hull opening would completely cover the factory forcing cone which was only 3/8ths inch long to begin with

even though it is marked as a 3-1/2 inch chamber it is still a 3 inch chambered barrel as he decided to leave it at the 3 inch length and just do the forcing cone work

it now has a 1-7/8ths inch forcing cone after i got finished with it

point being if you own one of these guns and find the recoil excessive then check the chamber length as you may find the same problem

Thats good info and should be a requirement for other smiths to check. Also The manufactures need to be aware that this maybe something they need to look into more.

Good job Docc.
