6.8 Western?

Is the 6.9 Western like the Minnie Skit? What!!!!!!!!!!!!! My question is, with all the cartridges we have available today do we really need another one? What will the 6.8 Western do that the current models want do? It seems we have gotten into designer cartridges just like designer women/men cloths. They come on with a big show and fan fair but fade out is a short time. Is it just a marketing point to get us to purchase another gun, more ammo and reloading equipment. I don't have a 6.8 Western but do I want one, it's the latest thing out, my wife said I can't buy one until I sale one or two. How many here are interested in a new cartridge?

The new NRA magazine had something on it if I recall. Looks to me like another .270 but much faster twist to stabilize heavier (longer/better BC) rounds. Dang sure looks like a fun one, supposedly hotter than 7 mm mag. Saw a guy saying ammo is available everywhere too.

I like having all the caliber options. New caliber craze sells guns and ammo if it is marketed correctly. Gives me new toys to play with. I don't want to have a cabinet full of the same caliber. I like to load my own so tinkering with the load is the best part of a new caliber.

My next one will be a 6.5 creedmoor. Probably a ruger precision or a bergara. I am starting to buy 6.5 ammo when I see it to have some when I buy the gun. I'm not saying I'm done with them but those big cartridges don't interest me much. My shoulders simply can't take them shooting them much.

Guys out west talked me into the Tikka T3x lite in 6.5, check that one out... crazy accurate and pretty smooth shooting.

I would think we have our needs as hunters well-covered already with existing cartridges. We already had super offerings in all action types & lengths.

The long range target games began to appeal to more shooters.

Not unlike sporting clays for shotgunner. Sure their old duck & deer guns were fine in woods & water....but specialist gear for clays, trap, etc became more popular.

Then the inevitable occurs.....hunters decide they ””need”” the new gear for woods & water.

Crossover occurs.

Gun & ammo manufacturers LOVE it.

I no longer mind a bit. I’m glad to see it. Reason being is that the shooting sports has attracted a PILE of additional gun owners & gun gun enthusiasts.

No longer is it only hunters & self defense guys like us driving the market, but it’s a much larger and more youthful group behind us now.

The left would easily be able to snuff out the liberties of the few hunters and self defense crowd. PETA types and supposed animal lovers paint us out to be poachers and slaughter mongers.

Hunting isn’t growing new hunters near fast enough. Self defense support would likely grow....but not quick enough.

I am all in favor of gun ownership buy any means available......whatever the cause is. Heck, I’m glad to see all the new shooters at the range....non-traditional demographics and all.

The more of us there are the harder the left will have to work to gain ground against us.

3-Gun, sporting clays, long distance games, bowling pin, steel, etc, etc.

Bring it on....and fast.

They can laugh heartily at my Fuddiness being perfectly happ with my oldschool guns in .45acp, .308, .270, .45/70, .44mag. I’m cool with all that.

Any new cartridge that attracts more to gun ownership, then all for the better.

Well said... and if I can get my teenage niece/nephews or kids in elementary school excited about some newfangled round that don't kick, don't drift, and can slay dragons to 1,000 yards, then so be it. We need to breath life into the 2A and supporting the industry and getting kids to the range or field is a great way to do so.

I love guns, all guns, rifle, shotgun, pistol, revolver and black powder too. The reason I started this on the 6.8 is that in my old age and being retired with limited income I have fallen behind and haven't been able to keep up with the new cartridges that have come out. The 6.5 family has several I am interested in but they come out with them fasted than I can save up to buy them. I guess I'll have to skip the 6.5's and put my money on the 6.8. I had planned on getting a 6.5 PRC but now I can get a 6.8 with my $1,400 Biden Ck. Just thought of that, thanks Joe, I needed a new 6.8 Western and I hear there is ammo available for it too, I'll take a 1,000 rounds.

I’m too old to get overly involved with a lot of the newer cartridges.....but I’m mighty hopeful to get some time to enjoy the old ones for many more years.

But I’m glad to see new interest with the latest & greatest gear for the new shooters that are coming along.

It's gonna do great. Winchester has the marketing thing figured out. Winchester and Hornady could both sell sand to Arabs.

I'd neck that down to .257" . .... with a 1-8" twist . .. a short action .257 WB....
Check out blackjack bullets... the knock on the quarter bore is low BC, lighter bullets, and slow twist (1:12). I love my 25-06 and the 257 Roy is a lightening bolt I almost bought if I could afford barrels at the time... but a slightly heavier bullet/faster twist with that much zip would be devastating. I’ve smoked big mulies in their tracks out to 350 yds with 117 gr bullets. I’m onboard with briarpatch.

Hey Briar how about necking down a 300 rem ultra mag down to 257??? Think someone would buy it? Maybe get hornady to make a 130 gr bullet for it...

I don't have anything that would shoot them ....my 25/06 is a 1-10" twist . ..

That why the 1-8" twist in the other post. ..

To the best of my knowledge .... Sierra makes them for Blackjack... If the barrel makers would cut some fast twist barrels ....there would be more bullets made for .257" calibers . .. It is not magic that high B.C. bullets are made in about every caliber ..... .257 is the red headed stepchild except for the Blackjack and a few others ...

It's already been mentioned but many of the new calibers are shooting those long bullets and focusing on longer ranges. We used to have to increase speed for long range and now they just increase the bullet length and rifle twist. A whole new world in rifles.

The classics will still be classics but we're gonna see more "Creedmoor" buffs in the future.

Look at it this way - someone says i want to buy a new gun, what to get? Used to be 308, 3006, 270, now its 6.5 CM, .28/.26 Nosler, or some other new cartridge.
