7 PRC

Good luck Josh! I’m getting nervous about my baby, the Grendel. I’ve noticed that the places I frequent are now only stocking 1 ammo option. For a while there were 4,5, sometimes 6 options with some cheap FMJ as a bonus. I don’t reload and only go with “safe” options in calibers. There’s so much variety now that we won’t all be able to win. The good news is that I only shoot her to make sure she’s still on and then hunt.

For me moving forward, 6.5 G will be the most exotic caliber I own. Maybe PRC will hang around.

Yes I’m not a fella that shoots for fun either unless it’s at a critter … I’ll have 10 boxes that this gun WILL shoot before I leave the shop …. I’ll be aight ….. I think you will too !!

Ammoseek.com You can find a variety there. I also have a grendal and love that lil caliber as much as the blackout. If you check on there from time to time you can find some deals that are almost unbelievable. When I bought my 6.5 PRC ammo in the store was anywhere from $50 to $65 a box,got the same exact ammo for $36 there

What does the 7mm Backcountry do that the 7mm PRC can't? I mean other than the cool name?

I'm not going to trade in my 7 Rem Mag for either.

Many of these new rounds are going to end up like the WSSMs and the 30 T/C. You'll be lucky if you can even find brass in ten years.
What’s wrong in someone wanting to buy a new rifle in a new cartridge that is only a little better ballistically than the 7 mag? (Which I happen to own). And what if ammo does get hard to find in 10 years? I believe you are missing the entire purpose.

Some people have fun trying new stuff. And if they shoot that new rifle well and it gives confidence when shooting at a deer, is that a bad thing?

PLUS it’s always good to have an excuse to buy a new rifle. Buying guns is just plain fun!

Blackston,
You seem to have no trouble killing plenty of deer with your 7RM.
Ammo will be more expensive and harder to find if you switch to the Whizzbang. What is the whizzbang going to do for you that your 7RM isn’t. The deer I see in your posts look pretty dead to me!

I guess that means you won't be able to shoot your rifle? That's my point.

The OP probably won't have that problem though because the PRC seems to be catching on pretty well. My comment was directed more towards that new 7mm Backcountry or whatever it's called.

There's nothing "wrong with it" as you put it but buying some cartridges just doesn't make sense especially when they're hot off the press. They're designed to make hunters and shooters spend more money because most of them do nothing new under the sun. I'm sure there are more than a few 300 and 338 Ruger Compact Magnum owners who regret their purchase. But hey, it's their money.

Nice rifle combo. Hard to make excuses with a gun that shoots like that :). It’s good to have top end equipment that gives you confidence! Being that it’s a relatively new creation(7prc)…once you find Ammo that it likes & performs well…I would stock up on it..and keep it in a nice, dry, place ;). For hunting…most of us won’t go through a box of 20 in a season..or more. I’d keep my brass, for reloading down the road.

Beltless.

Faster twist.

Has my interest.....somewhat.
And the main thing is that it can achieve the same FPS as the 7 PRC with an 18" Barrel. They have even tried it with 16" barrels and the speed is still outstanding. I really like the thought of getting the same performance from an 18" barrel that you would get from a 24" or 26". For the regular guy this probably does not matter. It does matter if you want to use a can. That is where having the shorter barrel is the game changer. I would be miserable hunting with a 24" barrel and a can.

Yep.

Some very legitimate aspects which are appealing to people who want those capabilities.

I don't, however, understand the pushback from the people who are happy with their tried & true classic gear. Nobody is going to be taking away the excellent .270, .30'06, .308Win, 7mmRemMag, etc.

I don't see it as an "either-or" scenario. Both can exist.
The market will determine if the new stuff has merit.

Dang shame how hunters, shooters, gun owners in general all tend to devolve towards infighting. Factions upon factions.

You'd think it would be as simple as pro-gun folks vs anti-gun folks.

I hope we’re not fighting here, just debating. Sometimes with spirit.

The Back Country can meet or exceed speed at distance from a much shorter barrel than the others. Not only that but the steel nickel plated casing with higher than ever seen pressures is showing no worse barrel life and that will open up many other fun cartridges to tinker with. It's never a bad thing when the industry does something out of the norm to change things up.

I'd like to see some testing done on the barrel life, plus you more or less loose the ability to reload. I won't be dashing out to replace my 7PRC with a 7 backcountry, but I agree it is interesting to see some innovation happening.
