71% of Consumers Assume Car Owners Already Have Access to Car Data ?

Something to think about. Newer model cars today are equipped with advanced technologies that enable real-time, wireless transmission of data related to driver behavior, GPS location and car health, including maintenance and repair information. Without control of and direct access to the diagnostic and repair information wirelessly transmitted from cars, consumers could face greater inconvenience, increased costs and fewer options for repair and maintenance services for their car. Should drivers have direct access to and control of their car data? Should you have the right to send this diagnostic information to the garage of YOUR choice or to a scanner you own to make the repair? Who owns this data ? That is very true, being an automotive tech I am aware of a lot of issues with the current technology used in cars and trucks now, we buy diagnostic scanners and tools necessary to diagnose todays vehicles but there are many areas we cannot get access to, and also many parts that the factories are not making available for repairs, many things can only be done through authorized factory dealers, they won't let the aftermarket repair have access to them.

Nissan is one of the worst, Mercedes also, BMW as well, and various others, even Ford and Gm are starting to restrict access to certain parts and diagnostic tech. They are trying to force the consumer to have to use the factory dealer for all repairs or diagnostics. Costs of replacement transmissions is ridiculously high for many of todays vehicles, sometimes only available through the dealer,

But the modern consumer still buys based on coolness factor and looks, even with the internet at their fingertips they still don't do the research they should on a vehicle before they buy it. I see it all the time when they find out their trans that went out just out of warranty costs over $4,000 to rebuild or replace.
