A Loan From God

I wrote this poem for all dog lovers including myself. Someone once told me many years ago as we discussed dog ownership. That person told me, spell God backwards.

A Loan From God

God promised at the birth of time, a special friend to give. His time on Earth is short he said, so love him while he lives. It may be for ten years or so, or only two or three. But will you till I call him back, take care of him for me?

A wagging tail and cold wet nose, and silky velvet ears, a heart as big as all outdoors, to love you through the years. His puppy ways will test you, his antics will bring a smile, as guardian and best friend for you he'll help you through life's trials.

He will bring his charms to brighten your days, and though his stay may be brief, when he's gone his memories, will be solace for your grief. I cannot promise that he will stay, since all to dust return, but lessons only a dog can give, I want you both to learn.

I have looked the whole world over,, in search of guardians true, and from the folks that crowd this Earth, I have chosen you. Whatever love you give to him, he'll return in triple measure. Follow his lead and gain a life, full of simple pleasures.

Enjoy each day as it comes, allow your hearts to guide. Be loyal and steadfast in your love, as the dog there by your side. Will you give him all your love, it will not be in vain. And please don't hate me when I come, to take him home again.

I want to hear both of you say, dear Lord thy will be done, for all the joys this dog shall bring, the risk of grief we'll run. We will shelter him with kindness, we will love him while we may, and for the happiness we have shared with him, grateful we shall stay.

But should the Angels come for him much sooner than we planned, we'll brave the bitter grief that comes, and try to understand. By our love for him if we've managed, God's wishes to achieve, in memory of him that we have lost, Lord help us as we grieve.

In loving memory for the 12 dogs my Wife and I have lost over our 47 years of marriage in this life. Rest easy our loyal friends one day soon we shall see you again.

I buried both of these dogs. I still shed a tear every now and again. I give more respect to these two animals than I would most humans. There is no possible way I can miss these animals more than anything, period.
There's to many dogs in my life to think about. I miss each and every one of them. I miss each and every one more than i can say... IMG_20150826_195342477.jpgIMG_20150830_181742613_HDR.jpg

fflintlock, that dog in the top picture is the spitting image of our old farm dog Tony back in the fifties. Tony was the best Squirrel dog I have ever seen or hunted behind. He lived for about 14 years. I still have a rabies shot tag from 1954 when I was eight years old that ole Tony wore. I feel the same way about our dogs that have passed on as you do holding love in our hearts for them forever.

I’ve got one aggravating hardheaded bird dog that many times I have sworn I was giving him away to the first person who came along to take him. I can’t see him being any where else but here.
