Any ideas on repairing/replacing this part?

It's cast aluminum, part of the motor cap in a Frankford Arsenal case tumbler. The cap seems to have split in half on one side, but fits together very well.

JB Weld? Find a new motor? Toss the whole shebang and get a new tumbler?

if it is aluminum, it can be heli-arc welded back together. I would add a reinforcement plate to it also. What caused it to break?

It is aluminum. Dunno what caused it to break other than the tumbler was manufactured in 2002 so it may just be old age and heavy use. I inherited it from a relative I've never met, kind of the old "long lost uncle" bit.

I would price getting it welded versus buying a new one

I should mention that the part is 2"x2", I'm not sure I could find a shop willing to even mess with something that small.

I'd just replace the whole tumbler it unless you could get a new part for under $10. It doesn't make sense to sink 5k in a car with 250k on the odometer unless the car is worth double that amount.

you can braze it back with aluminum rod and some propane or map. would probably hold for a good while. you can buy them at your local lowes etc.
start with the bottom side. then flip. grind slight groove on top following crack and fill with rod. finish the weld off flush.

Call Frankfort Arsenal, maybe they will have the part and do a goodwill warranty.

is that out of Frankford's Stainless System?

Not that I'm aware of - This was produced in 2002, I inherited it from a relative. There was a bunch of standard walnut media with it.

I'm planning to on Monday. It's more of "project" anyway, I have another tumbler on backorder with Midway. Just hate to throw something out if I don't have to.

I may have finally cogitated up a solution :)

It may be possible to make a flat steel plate to span the bottom of the broken bracket. I would use 1/8" thick stock. Then all you have to do is cut it to size, drill the 4 small holes and hole saw the larger hole and bolt it up. If you are near Sugar Hill I would be happy to help you out.

Does it have ball bearings or bronze bearings? I have an older one that quit because of the motor. It had the bronze ones and wasn't worthy fooling with. The bearings wear out and let it wobble so the armature hits the stator. If you could find a motor that fit, would be a cheap fix, but I never had much luck sourcing the right one. The last 2 Frankford Arsenals I bought in the last 5 years surprisingly have ball bearings. They started sticking, I took apart and discovered it had the bearings, regreased and they work like new. Seems like they are about $40 for the whole unit at Academy.

If it were me I would JB weld it and clamp it in a table vise. Especially if you have another on backorder. If it doesn't work you aren't out anything.
