As some of you saw on an earlier post our farm and hunting was hit hard by Helene. The deer

hunting has been abysmal with deer changing travel patterns and our inability to access 50 to 60 percent of our property due to downed trees and the lack of being able to find a logger. I also hit and could not find a nice booner up in Illinois back in early November so overall it has been a rough year having to think about losing him daily and my wife asking me daily why I seem so depressed.

One enjoyable experience has come out of the hunting season and I know this is a deer hunting forum but I wanted to share it. While deer hunting a spot (that we can actually access) I heard and saw a ton of ducks flying over my head and I could hear them landing a few hundred yards down in some young natural regen hardwoods a few weekends ago. I decided to walk back in the woods around some downed trees a little further and I found a one acre area holding water about 3 feet deep with wood ducks flopping in and out. It was covered with them. Maybe this hole has always been there and I just didn't realize it or maybe the heavy rains from the hurricane filled it up quicker than normal. I told my oldest about it and of course he begged me to carry him duck hunting. I have never been into it having only gone once or twice in my life and my only experience comes from watching duck dynasty 15 or 20 years ago. I do not even own a set of bibs. I set our property up for deer, turkey, quail, and dove and that's all I have ever cared to hunt so this was new to me.

We had our sights set on Friday morning after Thanksgiving. I got my duck stamp for my license and became legal. We borrowed a bib from neighbor's kid and I hung out on the edge with my waterproof boots in about 1.5 feet of water (Bibs are rediculous in price)...not knowing if this was going to be a legit duck hole of not. Needless to say it was. My son had limited out in about 8 shots (he is a dang good shot for being 11), I limited out, and my nephew did as well. He was smiling from ear to ear up until I dropped him off for school this morning.

Now this puts me in another predicament where he is picking out all sorts of duck gear for Christmas and holy smokes none of that is cheap. He also wants me to convert a hidden pond (in addition to the new one I found) to a duck hole and plant millet there this summer when the water level drops on the rear shallow portion of the pond. He is nose deep in youtube duck hunting habitat videos now. Needless to say I think he became hooked. Full disclosure...the ducks he is holding is all of our harvest...not just his (9 total).

Glad yall are finding a way to make lemonade. Looks like he has been bit by the bug.

I always feel bad when I get someone hooked on duck hunting - deer hunting is easier on the pocket book to get started. Need some camo and a rifle to get started with deer.

Duck hunting is endless. Need waders, then decoys, realize you want a benelli/beretta shotgun, calls (for out of state hunting) etc. Then you buy a reasonable boat. The boat you bought won't go where you want to get - sell that boat, buy a mud boat. Now you need a layout boat to hunt divers. Time to get a duck dog. The list goes on!

Great that you have found a little joy from that catastrophe! I got smacked pretty good in the river bottom, but not as bad as you from your previous post. Casual duck hunting is a lot of fun, you just have to figure how deep you want to get involved. Good luck, great pics!

This. Truth is I have loved deer hunting my entire life but if we had great duck hunting in Georgia within an hour of me I would never deer hunt again.

Helene changed the landscape for sure in parts of Georgia. It really has taken a toll on my wife and I being involved in forestry and agriculture with our jobs. Not to mention the mess from it at home. I feel for you on the damage your property has taken. The good news is you have your family and there’s still happy times ahead.

Great story with a great outcome. Same happened to me in the early 90’s on a big drainage of Long Creek in Oglethorpe County. Both my boys got into the woodies back then and holy cow…became obsessed with duck hunting.

Look forward to more duck posts from your place. Glad you’re at least finding something positive from Helene. Hate it for you on the timber damage.

How big is the farm. Just wondering.
Our place is around 700 acres total on this track. 550 of it has been in the family since the 1820/1830s I think. I bought another 150 a few years ago that borders it. Prior to 9/27 I had it set up for everything I dreamed of with mowed roads, hidden plots, stand locations etc. I know it sounds like I am whining but man that’s a lot of time and work down that vanished in one night. It also pains me to know my boys will not get to chase a turkey in our hardwood bottoms again. It will be 100 years for that to come back.

Yeah it’s crazy…I am not sure how the timber market will operate in the next 3 to 5 years in the eastern side of the state.

I am not sure what to really do at the moment. Beg a logger/wood buyer to pay me bottom dollar for the wood on the ground and standing. Wait a few years and see if I can get a decent price for the still standing wood. I would like to clear cut and start over as well as soon as possible.

700 acres be easy not to know of a little wood duck hole. :)
You will get it fixed back up. Won’t be line original.

It is hard to walk away from a hunt like that and not want more. Very Nice!

You have a new hobby. If you can restrict it to the wood duck hunting. I've been chasing ducks since I watched my dad miss 2 black ducks on a cold winter day about 50 yrs ago. It is a passion that burns deep. Duck hunting has changed a lot - tons of people now and the old gentleman style of hunting has been replaced with an aggressive competitive style that I don't quite care for. A couple woody holes would be heaven as opposed to the public marshes.

Four years ago Hurricane Michael murdered our deer hunting spot in Lee. Timber down everywhere , permanently altering traditional travel patterns, etc. My #1 stand, along a powerline....I'd see 25-30?each hunt. Sometimes 40+. Now I call it a good day when I see 4. May take 35-40 years for Mother Nature to bring things back to normal...I'll be flying around with angels wings by that time.
