Any idea how deep the water is right there ?

...just joking, seriously.
With the big tides on that coast, the current is no joke.
With a full moon, especially...
71° water doesnt sound that cold, but can be shocking.
Probably easy to get pinned in debris and structure...
Yikes.
Prayers for all ...

I remember a very similar tragedy in AR. There was an old single lane cable bridge the state had shutdown to vehicle traffic. Folks would still walk the bridge across the cold headwaters of the river. I went there several times. One could see huge trout in the weeds below the bridge.

A large group of kids on a church retreat got on the bridge at once. The teens wiggled the cables and the whole 80 year old bridge went in the river. They were very lucky the loss of life was not greater though many were injured.

At the press conference today they said it was built in 2021 so something had to go seriously wrong for it to fail that quick I would think. Also there was no collision involved

The pictures I saw showed an aluminum gangway, my guess is saltwater corrosion and probably overloading from original designed loads. It’s also possible that dissimilar metals were used in fasteners. Could have been poor quality welds or a combination of all these factors.

I hope the engineers figure out what happened and take steps ensure it doesn’t happen again. It’s terrible that it even happened.

Think I read where 200 people were on that large dock / gangway / walkway. That's gotta be more than it was designed for?

Remember when the barge hit the bridge abutment and didn’t report it. That freeway bridge fell in the river. Similar could have happened here.

I wonder how many couldn't swim and water temperature on top of that.
The list of the names of the deceased I read were all in their 70’s. If my calculations of the tides was right it would have been close to low tide, which would have placed a rolling gangway a significant incline.
