Yeah, those look like honey mushrooms from a distance. Do they have a ring on the stem?

I've got a lot of that growing around here where I've cut down trees and burned the stumps. They always end up dying, turning black, and stinking really bad within a few weeks.

Ringless honey mushrooms. Do a spore print, if it's white, you're fine to eat them. Eastern europeans and italians eat a tonne of them but they boil them for 90 minutes and pour the water off (afterwards, prepare them as you would any other mushroom). About 1 in 10 have mild to moderate gastro issues otherwise. Americans don't cook them enough - as they recommend 15 minutes or so.

The caps are great, the stems are tough. Only way to eat the stems is to chop them somewhat finely. Caps are about the same texture and flavor as a ****akke.

White spore print and the clusters stem should taper down. If spore print is brown and growing on wood, stay away. Could be gallerina.
