Dumb Regs Question

I'm assuming that I understand this correctly, but just clarifying. Hogs can be hunted at any time, with any weapon correct? For example, it's bow season for deer but I could still sit in my deer blind and shoot hogs over the feeder with a rifle?

Only on private land. On public land you can only use weapons that are allowed for any open hunts that are allowed on that property. For instance, since deer is bow only right now, you can't hunt hog on any WMA that is open for deer hunting unless you are using a bow. About the only loophole I can think of is if you are hunting squirrel right now I believe you are allowed to use a rimfire, so technically you could hunt hog with a .22 IF the public land you are hunting is open for squirrel right now.

eavega, you can also use muzzleloaders, and shotguns with #2 shot or smaller in addition to rimfire and archery.

ssramage, I assume you are referring to private land as you mentioned a feeder. You can use whatever you want for hogs including shooting them at night.

Just remember, you're hog hunting only. You cannot have your bow with you in blind to shoot a deer. You can only do one of the two on the given sit. (Private land)

If you are on a WMA, you are restricted to only the armament that is legal for the game animal in season (pigs are not game animals).

If it's firearms big game animals, you have to wear blaze orange and hunt with a legal big game weapon. (As it is right now for bears on a couple of mountain WMA's)

Also, on WMA's:

- During squirrel season, I hunt pigs with a .22 mag, even though I could use a shotgun (loaded with small game shot), any bow, or any muzzleloader. You cannot "claim" to be small game hunting, during a big-game hunt to avoid orange or a minimum firearm restriction.

- During archery deer - you can hunt pigs with small game arms without orange.

Here is what I use for hogs on mountain WMA's:

During squirrel season (which is anytime squirrel season is open, except when something bigger is in season) - .22 Mag
During Archery Season - A compound bow. If I have a friend, one of us takes a .22 Mag
During Early Firearms Bear - .30/06 (wear orange)
Normal Deer - .30/06 (wear orange)
Turkey - 12 gauge shotgun. I carry a couple of #2 tungsten shells in my vest. Perfectly legal for turkey, but will kill a hog 100 yards away!

Muzzle loaders are great for some folks, but I'm not a fan - Just me...
