Early season rubs

I went out last Saturday morning to a spot I've been scouting. No deer, but I did see a good rub on a tree. Do big bucks start making rubs earlier, or was a deer just stripping his velvet?

Both. As soon as the velvet peels, bucks start to rub trees.

They are starting to show a lot more aggression. Working scrapes and harder rubbing.

...just joking, seriously.
I think bigger bucks start earlier.

Our bucks had a flurry of activity right when the velvet was cast - scrapes and rubs - but it fell off very quickly.

In October, the activity will pick back up.

When I walked my land line the other day I found a good size post oak that had the bark rubbed off of it. There were also several scrapes to. I expect to see a lot more over the next few weeks.
