Electric Fence for Squirrels

Load of #6 out of
A 20 ga works best. Don’t over think it
Trying not to but the underground cable I bought to go from the charger to the tree is 14 gauge and it's definitely hot at the tree (I zapped myself). Just can't figure out why the HC isn't being charged (I tried to zap myself on the HC strips). From what I've read, galvanized HC is conductive.

Maybe the screws you installed the HC with are contacting the t-posts in some places?

"Load of #6"? S'plain, please.
#6 refers to the size of the shot in a 2 3/4 inch 20 gauge shotgun shell. Kills em graveyard dead. Preferable to a.22 bullet as it does not travel as far.

I like a light modified choke, however, that is just user preference.

Evidence can be eaten as hillbilly pictured

Post #23 could explain how it could be grounding out. Are you sure that none of the screws and washers that contact the HC are in contact with metal and gounded inside the pvc pipe?

How is the wire lead connected to the hardware cloth beneath the washer? If the connection isn't solid you might want to bare the ends of the leads and weave them through part of the HC for better contact.

Man you coulda had some metal roof flashing unrolled around that tree and a hundred more by now! Simple is always the best way.

Not positive, but they are only half inch sheet metal screws and the metal stakes inside are the cheap green ones, very thin. The stakes are three feet above the ground and the PVC is 5 feet. I'll see if I can get something thin to slide down inside the PVC and check.
I just made a hook on the wire behind the washers. I think I'll try your suggestion of getting more contact with the HC.
Thank you.

I tried that with a bird feeder and it didn't even slow them down.
As I stated earlier, I'm retired and looking for things to do. This is an interesting project. I like gadgets and figuring things out.
Well aint no harm in that i guess.

Remove metal screws and washers from post. Use zip ties to attach fence to post. Use split bolt connector to connect hot lead and ground lead to fence. This should work.

Could be that or just not making an adequate connection with the WM.

Finally, success! As much as I hate to admit it, a couple of screws were touching the metal posts inside the PVC and grounding the system. Now that I've backed them out and attached the wires from the charger with copper split bolts (thanks Jim), the first two strips are charged. I'm going to try to use alligator clips to connect the other strips.
Thanks again, everyone.
