Tying a Brood X Cicada – ENCORE SESSION!
Friday, May 14 at 7 p.m.
You'll need to enter the meeting number ("932 7714 6273") as well as the passcode ("cicada")
On last Saturday's Tying Bench, the spotlight was on tying a fly to imitate Brood X cicadas. We had a great time, and many great cicada flies were tied!
But some folks were not able to make the Saturday morning session and have asked if we will be doing the cicada class again.
Yes, we will – this Friday, May 14, at 7 p.m. on Zoom!
If you missed the first session, or if you’d like a refresher on what we covered last Saturday, you’ll want to be a part of this special Tying Bench encore session.
All are welcome, and there is no charge. I hope to see you there!
HOOK: Size 4 or size 6 2XL hook
THREAD: Black or red, 3/0
BACK: Black foam strip (we will use 3mm foam) cut to shape as we will discuss in the class
UNDERBODY: Brown standard chenille. Solid brown or a variegated orange/brown or black/brown can be used.
RIBBING: Cactus chenille in orange, red, or root beer
WING: On this encore edition, we'll use synthetic material for the wing. Here are two good possibilities. Either can be used:
Wing option 1: A material such as Flash-N-Slinky in "Rainbow" color
Wing option 2: Kreelex Fish Flash in gold combined with a few strands of Kreelex Fish Flash in mottled gray or brown
LEGS: Silicone or elastic leg material, orange/black.
EYES: The eyes of Brood X cicadas are red. Imitate them in a number of ways:
Eye option 1: Red plastic bead eyes (made from plastic beads on a thread core)
Eye option 2: Use silver plastic bead eyes, as above, but color them with a permanent red marker after tying them in.
Eye option 3: Make eyes from red craft foam
OTHER TOOLS AND SUPPLIES YOU'LL WANT TO HAVE:
1) Craft scissors for cutting foam
2) Zap-A-Gap
3) Red permanent marker (if needed for coloring silver eyes to make them red)
