Firing primitive pottery

Ive found a bunch of pottery sherds at camp. Got me interested in how primitive pottery was made. So last year I gathered several different types of clay which I am currently processing and refining.
Anyone ever fire primitive pottery? Any thoughts or tips to share? I've watched videos and read up on it but would appreciate real life experiences from anyone who has given it a go.

I’ve always used blue clay mixed with a little sand to form a pot. Bury in sand at least one foot deep and build fire on top.
