Ga Public ramps

I am a Savannah Native and son of a commercial fisherman . I even made quite the little enterprise for myself crabbing as a young man ( mamma would drive to the ramp launch me and come back and get me at an appointed time ) ….. I’ve lived away from the coast for a while. So my question is…. Today I rode down to the boat ramp At skidaway island and I see sign that says NO COMMERCIAL USE …. So what is the dying breed of commercial fisherman supposed to do?

It's a public ramp. Use it anyway.

Who would even know?
A commercial crab boat is a jumbo carolina skiff stacked tall with crab pots. Not exactly subtle.

They should be able to find another ramp nearby.

Mighta been posted by a commercial guy operating local. Not exactly a noncompetitive endeavor.

but why should they have too is my question? …. They can’t use the ramp so there is more room for some salt life influencer to have plenty of room to get plenty of likes….

As indicated in other post. It isnt just the recreational guys it is other commercial guys causing trouble for eachother.

I watched some commercial oyster guys lose work. The buyers sold out. New owners would only buy from a couple folks.

As for the ramp issue. You get your comm permit and are legal, should be able to launch at a state owned public launch.

Seems like someone upset a person of influence and now you cant. Gotta find another ramp.

Or start going to meetings and see if you can get rules changed.

Or take your chances.

Salt life folks pump way more money into the system and takes way less. My cuz has 25 ft boat. $400/month for docking, $100/trip for gas, buys bait, eats lunch or dinner at local spot, doesnt keep hardly any fish cause they dont catch much. Goes 1x week. That’s salt life.

Comm guy drops in, takes couple bushells of crabs/fish every trip and is a net negative for the fish/crab/shrimp/oysters/clams of the area as compared to my cuz who only adds money to folks pockets. Only folks who benefit on comm side is gas station and fish buyer.

Not sure how many pots you run, most guys where we fish run 100-200+. Used to be more guys but we had a major algae bloom - about wiped the place out for about 10 yrs. Mosquito Lagoon.

Im not here to argue. You asked a question - my opinion, which is worth what you paid for it. Things have changed, you have to change with them to succeed. You cant rationalize it, just adapt.

Still ain’t right …. Those men have been launching there since it was dirt road ……. And FYI that ain’t salt life
I do agree that it isnt right. At the very least a commercial guy aint gonna tie up the ramp for 15 minutes on a Saturday morning with a line of boats ready to go.

Could always make a few phone calls. I would like to guess that state funded places are open to all legal activities.

Might start with that line of conversation as opposed to just asking why no commercial. Get em to say all legal uses are allowed, then ask about the commercial restrictions, and why.

I really no longer have a dog in this fight , but it really just rubbed me wrong !! I wonder if it’s all ramps or just the one that is Very close to one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the county ? Any way that place has been a part of shrimping/ crabbing history for years ! Progress I reckon ! https://forum.gon.com/threads/a-little-heritage.989148/post-12735919

I think you pegged it.

Folks should have to sign an “I wont change a thing and will vote like the locals” clause when they move into an area.
