Gar Action / Spawn in middle GA

So I remember about 15years ago I was on Lake Juliette and saw a ton of gar up on top in the middle of the day. We were casting stick baits at them and getting hits and couldnt land them. I finally have some gar lures made out of rope and want to give it a try. Is now a good time?

Im hoping it will get my 9 year old son interested in fishing again

They have already spawned now, but they aren't interested in lures when they're spawning, anyway. You should be able to find some cruising the banks now if you ease back into the creeks and necks.

If you got a lake with grass they are all over it up near the banks right now.

I made a couple of rope lures just how I saw on YouTube. I ended up landing about 1 gar for every 613 strikes. Not sure what I was doing wrong.
