Just a note; automatic reels won't hold much backing at all. You should put some on if, for no other reason than to give you something to tie your fly line to. Also, you won't find many fish that can pull drag against those springs so you're not needing backing for fighting fish.

Like Robust Redhorse said. Spool it backwards first. If you don't like the reel I can scrap it for you.

Another thing you can do is cut off some of the back of the fly line to make room for more backing. It might also allow you to report such things as "I was able to cast my entire fly line" or "a bunch of fish took me into the backing today".
