I like how the abundant life is explained here, from RHM, used by permission:

I believe that Christian growth is not change in the sense of becoming something you are not, but of growing into what and who you already are. If you were crucified with Christ and are a new creation, a new creature, then the path ahead is to find out and grow in who you are now, not to grow out of who you used to be in order to become something better. “Better” has arrived! A baby does not become more human as he reaches adulthood; a Christian does not become more Christian as his years increase. He was born a perfect Christian and is growing into what and who he is, increasingly becoming “mature in Christ.” That’s why you’ve got to know who you became at new birth. You’ve arrived! 1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
2 Therefore when thou doest [thine] alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites [are]: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
