Last year I saw Branden's thread about taking a bird with his dad's old gun. That inspired me to take an old gun I received back in 1999 out of retirement. This gun was originally owned by a man named Leo. Leo was an old, retired Army DI and he was a hunting buddy of my dad's back in the late 1960's and early 70's. Leo hunted with his model 12 featherweight and my dad always admired it. My dad always told him that if he ever wanted to sell the gun, he would buy it. Anyway, long story short Leo eventually got cancer, and he called my dad one day and told him if he wanted the gun he had better come get it. My dad did and in less than a week later Leo was gone. When I was coming up learning to hunt in the early 80's I often carried and hunted with Leo's old model 12. Fast forward to spring 1999 when I was up turkey hunting with my dad in Iowa, he told me he wanted to give me this gun. I was ecstatic! I told my dad I would eventually like to hunt turkeys with this gun. It took my 26 years, but I finally got serious about it this winter and shot several different turkey loads through it until I found a shell it liked and a pattern that I was comfortable with out to 40 yards.
On Wednesday during Iowa firs season I called in two toms at 11:15 and I was able to take on of them with the old Model 12. It was cool to take the bird in the state it had originally downed many roosters in 50 plus years ago. The bird weighed right at 20# had a 9 1/2 beard with matching 7/8 hooks. Attached are two pictures one of the bird and the old gun as well a as a picture of My dad on the left, Leo Center and another man named Dale on the right. They are photographed with a season's worth of rooster tales from the glory days of Pheasant hunting in Iowa.
