Have you saw a major decrease in the turkey population in your area?

They all flew south to Morgan and Putnam Counties.

They might have but I haven't saw any place in those counties that was like Oglethopre back in the early 90's.

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Seriously, I don't think we have the birds we did ten years ago. I know for a fact Grant doesn't.

Ive heard Brad Gill say that he doesn't hear near as many at BF Grant that he used to either.

They trapped birds off my property both in the 80's and in the 90's, took hundreds. We took a big hit the last time they trapped and it's been slow for the flock to come back but for the last 8yrs it seems like it's been getting better despite weak hatches.

We found a nest last season with around 12 eggs, came back the next weekend and all the eggs had been eaten, the work of coons most likely. We took two more coons off the property last night, that's 8 so far in Janurary alone!!! got someone over there hunting again tonight; gonna put a hurt on the nest robbers this year for sure!!!

On my monticello club. They are GONE!!!!!!!!!! In the late 90's you would hear 10 or 12 gobbling every weekend. We only killed a few.It was good for a few years. Then all of a sudden one year.NOTHING. Didnt hunt it at all for a few years and tried it last year.STILL NOTHING.. I know for a fact its not the coons that did it.We kept them thin... I think it was coyotes. I shot 2 different ones the last good year. They were slipping in on me while calling....

I've been hunting in Hancock Co. for eleven years on a small tract of land. First six years we had two different flocks of about 20 birds each and always had 3-5 birds gobbling every morning during the season. The last four years you would do good to hear one bird in 2-3 days. But this deer season I saw a flock of about 20 birds biggest I've seen in 4 years, hopefully this land is on the rebound. Also a friend of mine has land in Putnam Co. and while my land was going bad his was getting better and better going from just a few birds to having them everywhere. So maybe my land and yours will make a big come back. Good luck chasing the birds.

Same for our Hancock club we have had the land for over 20 yrs and saw the number of birds drop to nothing and now are starting to rebound. I can only guess but as our dillo population increased the turkey pop decreased now its going the other way we see hardly any dillos but more turkey.

The turkeys have seem to have left my land also. It was select cut about 3 yrs ago and the birds have been gone since. The land has got thick now and one thing that kills us is we are surrounded by farm land. County wise here in Haralson the overall population seems good. You can ride the roads and see a good many birds on most days.

Take a season off??

....I know I have....The places I grew up hunting just don't have any birds on them anymore....It seems like every year im looking for different places to find turkeys...We used to ride dirt roads around Oglethorpe County looking for turkeys and never had ANY problem seeing any....Now, it is RARE to ride up on any birds around there...It may just be the area where I grew up at but I doubt it....You can still find a few birds in Oglethorpe but they are not near as plentiful as they once were...

Maybe you should take a season off and let them replenish:bounce::bounce: Ive seen lots of pics of you and dead birds:rolleyes: Jokin Brandon,
I just moved back last year and hunted areas I hunted 5yrs ago and didnt hear much at all. I thought maybe it was an off year:huh: Hope thats the case this year..

used to hunt the area in oglethorpe around stevens and maxeys back in the early 90's. tons of turkey back then. we lost our lease due to a land owner change. you guys say they all disappeared? shame... that was an awsome area then.

Yes.I think it is 2 things.Coyotes, and I feel like the use of chicken manure in fields has caused alot of the birds to catch disease. That's big money over here,so it's kept quiet. You don't see birds in those fields anymore like you used to..

Big decrease around me due to 2 words...illegal hunting.
Poachers hunting over bait all year long has done a real number on them around me. Coyotes, coons, possum, fire ants...all do big damage to eggs but the biggest cause for the decrease is poaching in my area. Neighbors like to brag about going after their wild turkey for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter...doesn't matter if it's a hen, it if comes near their corn pile it's dead.

well at our place in Lincoln County, we routinely see a flock of 15 or so, and there are coyotes all over our place. and I saw a flock of about 30 Sunday morning driving to church around the corner from my folks' house in Newton County.

of course, they don't get hunted very hard in those 2 areas, and in both cases, I think my neighbors are feeding them. The big flock from Sunday, though, was out in a field, not where anyone would be feeding them.

of course... there are no armadillos up this way just yet... coincidence? I think not... :bounce:
