Huge property tax increase

I agree with a reasonable amount of taxes to fund infrastructure, national security, and such. We are way past that. And I think property taxes are a pure-out scourge and immoral and evil and should be abolished. They basically mean that you work your whole life to buy things that can never be really yours. You just rent your property from the county. And they punish productivity.
I realized many decades ago that a man owns nothing, like you said the county and the state owns everything. I always tell others that I rent my car, house, boat from the county. Come August we will get our property tax notice, I have no doubt that my taxes will increase quite a bit. Our homeowners insurance is due next month and it goes up every year to the tune of 3-4 hundred bucks.

Anyone doesn't believe that way needs to look at the fine print on "their" property deed where it reads something like "All lands and properties inside the borders of the United States of America are the property of the United States of America." Or something like that... been a lot of years since I stashed my deed.

And....the government seems to be setting up things for people to not "own"
larger pieces of land and single family homes. I believe that in time, we will be taxed out of our property, homes and gasoline vehicles too.

Only if we let em. Its still up to us. Just have to have enough people say no and thats that.

An inland port/ freight terminal will ruin your area. The train freight terminal in Austell has resulted in container trucks cutting thru side roads to avoid Hiram and Hwy 92 destroying the roads and causing traffic congestion. They cut thru roads not designed for trucks destroying the sidewalks and curb and gutter. During Covid the government upped the allowed weights and the roads are trashed. Some of the container trucks cannot pull the hills on Hwy 92 without dropping to 20 mph. In addition the government is about 15 years late on expanding Hwy 92 to a four lane. Guess they cannot get enough taxes to pay for it?

When you hear politicians talk about giving teachers a raise that money has to come from somewhere. About 60% or more of a school budget is personnel.

Got our assessment today. Currently double what it was 2 years ago. Probably about right on house value but the piece down the road a bit is just under double what it's worth. Can I convince the county to buy it from me for their appraised value?

Got to make up tax revenue from all us old timers not having to pay the school tax portion. The over 65 population of Hall and Forsyth is growing pretty fast.
We have an issue in Forsyth. People buy a house. Finish the basement where the grandparents live. House is in grandparents name. Mom, Dad, and kids live upstairs. No school taxes. There gonna ruin it for the folks who really need the exemption. Won't be long in my opinion that seniors will lose the exemption because of those gaming the system.

They'll be at least another 10yrs before they ever complete it, and the huge warehouses they've built off of Brightstar in Douglasville are adding more trucks to the area, and will require a tax increase to repair infrastructure because they haven't maintained much of anything,

Let them game the system, I've been paying school taxes for almost 30yrs, and never had kids, my stepkids went to a public school all of two years before we yanked them out and home schooled them, and I'm still paying school taxes. There are a lot of people out there with zero kids that still have to pay school taxes,,,

Lots of folks would be whining worse if roads, bridges, traffic signals, etc weren’t maintained. TSPLOST does that kinda stuff.
Road maintenance is still needed. Been on some nasty roads lately. One example is 285 north from 85 to 75. Especially the lane I was in yesterday.

Just sayin if it doesn't get fixed it will probably get fixed at the detriment of others. We all pay taxes for things that we don't necessarily use. It's not a usage tax. Also I am not a Senior so I pay full amount.

The house across and one door up from me. Sold for 90K above anything else ever sold here. Another excuse to raise taxes next year.

We just got ours.
2022 Valuation - $367,500
2023 Valuation - $516,400

Total tax increase of 36%.

Dekalb county done learned how to eat meat and they traded up from Bottom Round to Filets.

Yeah, I'll be appealing it. It'll be a waste of time but I can't walk away from a good fight.

Being exempt from taxation because you meet an arbitrary age is gaming the system too

We had a 26% increase here in Northern Gwinnett. I knew it was coming with that sales price of homes in my neighborhood. Not gonna complain if I get that price when I sell it in a year or so.

Nope. What will happen is grandma and grandpa will have to go down to the tax commissioner's office every two or three years and sign an affidavit they are still living in the house. That's what Chamblee is doing.

The exemption is based on who's name is on the deed and what age they are. You must provide a photo ID to confirm age. The deed would have to be in the grandparents name which has some downsides for a couple with kids.
