Looking for simple and basic

So it looks like they are changing the law which allowed for centerfire rifles on wmas with hogs during furbearer season. Dang it!
This is one of my favorite seasons! Sooooooo i guess im gonna get me a muzzleloader(been thinkin about it anyways) but im not really a black powder guy so i just want something easy to load and clean. Very basic no frills just easy to use for a guy just needing a legal weapon.
What say yall? I was gonna look at the new nitrofire but it looks like hit or miss...

My son has one, came with a Konus 3-9 scope. It was on clearance at local Wal-Mart. Less than $200 if I remember correctly. It shoots well with 90 grains of Triple 7 FFG and Hornady Great Plains bullet.

This. Right. Here.

Won't get any simpler, or cost effective.

Stay FAR away from that nitro-fire thingie.

My son Dusty and I spent the weekend trying to get one to shoot an acceptable group at 100.

No Dice. Gun returned, and swapped for something that'll work reliably.

Like other have said, CVA Wolf. I would strongly recommend Blackhorn 209 powder, it's almost as clean as a modern cartridge. You have to pay a little more attention when loading than with the pellets, but you'll be glad when it comes to cleaning it. Also, if you go with Blackhorn you must use CCI shotgun primers (not muzzleloader primers) or you will get hang fires. That stuff needs a really hot spark to light.

Federal 209 primers used to be the hottest, not sure where CCI falls.

There is a blackhorn 209 primer holder, breach plug kind of thing with a larger hole than the normal one. It has a larger flash hole.

Pretty sure I got the Blackhorn breech plug, forgot about that detail. Even with that plug I tried CCI muzzleloader primers at first and had 3 hang fires trying to zero the rifle. It may not have to be CCI, but maybe just shotgun primers. Hang fires suuuuck!

Thanks for all the good info! Should help me get set up pretty good to hunt them winter hogs after the rules change. I guess i will have to try my luck in deer season as well. Cant hurt to have an extra week with a gun to hunt.

I had a cva wolf and really loved it until I bought the encore and contender muzzleloader. Traded it and still
I use the pellets to load the second shot faster and still the cleaning is as easy as shootin it to me. Just clean it more often and you’ll be glad you did.
I bring my cleaning kit with the muzzleloader everywhere the muzzleloader goes except the stand. It’s just plain funner.

I bought an Optima V2. Like the wolf it is as simple as it gets, it is just one step up from the wolf. Very accurate with multiple bullets. Look for a sale, I got my Optima a few years back for a steal.

I have not personally tried the Blackhorn 209 yet, but will be testing it soon.

The .50 cal CVA Wolf is a good value. I upgraded the scope that came with mine, and it is a good shooter. At 100 yds the first three holes are touching. I use two 50 grn White Hot Pellets and 250 grn Barnes T-EZ bullets. Great combination, and deadly on big hogs.

Is the stock scope junk or you just wanted a little better? Im also playing with the idea of gettin the iron sights version, but not sure yet.

The scope that came with it was not good. If I were to do it again I would not buy the combo. Just purchase the gun, and then what ever scope you like separately. My eyes don’t like iron sites anymore. Scope works better for me.

After the nitro-fire fiasco, Dusty showed up with an Optima and a Hawke 3x9, some 295 gr powerbelts, and white hot pellets.

The thing performed flawlessly, predictably, and accurately. One thing happened that amazed us both, and proved that the gun/bullet/propellant combo was working well.

About 25 yards out, all the plastic cups off the powerbelts from several shots landed in about a 12" circle....

We also found that sighted with the PB's, you can also use the much cheaper TC Mag Sabots which land 1-2 inches higher at 100.

He's a happy camper, and I was impressed with the new fangled setup.

Excellent!

I just picked up an Optima, 777 powder, and some 250 gr SST sabot loads.

Trying to decide on a scope right now. Thinking to use it out to 200 yards if that's possible.

I don’t know about the 200 yard mark. Those bullets are dropping a lot from 100 to 200. However if that’s where you set it you will be good. However as railroader wrote my current set up is good but still dead center with that combo at 100 yields 6 inch drop at 150.

Thanks for this. I was plugging numbers into a ballistics calculator and was getting about 3 or 4 inches high at 100 for a 150 zero and negative 8 inches at 200 If I remember correctly. Gonna have to double check it.

That would be doable. Maybe a bdc scope. To help w things?
