Military History Trivia

That ship represents a great America that we need today. President Reagan realized that and used it to inspire respect and admiration to us and among nations. As a symbol it still inspires me, today’s technology has left it far behind but in its day it was a marvel. The mechanical computers for fire control were incredible.

With you there.

I wish the US could afford an armored, fast, big gun platform today. Something like Big Mo, or any of the Iowa's, would be a statement at every port call. With new weapons tech, it is possible to build on that can defend against missile attack, torpedo and mine, and deliver 16" ordinance more than 100 klicks or rockets more than 1,000!

Just dreaming!

I’m with you,I’d like America to be respected worldwide and not just out of fear. We were there in my childhood, I want to see it again.

What US ship served in two theaters of war?
You piqued my interest. Figured there was more than 1. The Battleships Texas, Arkansas and Nevada all served in WW1 and served in both theaters in WW2. The carrier USS Wasp served in both theaters. The Heavy Cruisers Quincy and Tuscaloosa also served in both theaters. I didn't look into destroyers or destroyer escorts and lesser vessels but there were probably a ton of them.

The German Tiger Tank was a daunting killing machine with its giant gun able to go right thru our Sherman Tanks 3" armor at a mile distance.
Was size gun was on the Tiger and what was its original use?

It was the 88mm, great gun and used as an anti aircraft gun throughout the war as well.

Who is the only US Coast Guard member to earn the Medal of Honor? He was awarded the Medal posthumously after his actions in Sept. 1942 leading a group of Higgins boats to rescue a Marine Battalion trapped by a larger Japanese force. He was killed during the rescue.
Signalman 1st Class Douglas A. Munro

This Marine was also in the 1st Division, 7th Marines, like Gunnery Sergeant Basilone. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions the day after Sgt. Basilone for essentially the same actions with the same weapons, .50 Caliber machine guns. They were awarded with the Medal on the same day standing next to one another. Difference was this guy accepted a promotion to become an officer when Basilone did not. This guy also served in Korea and retired as a Colonel. Who is he?
Sgt. Mitchell Paige.

What pilot flew more missions than any pilot in WWII? Was credited with sinking a Japanese ship solely by strafing with machine guns. Had the pleasure of sitting next to or behind him at church most every Sunday for several years before he passed away in 2003. It was several years of knowing him before I learned his story and can remember sitting there in awe of this very humble and unassuming elderly man who had done so much more in his lifetime that most could ever hope to comprehend.
Colonel Lynn Witt, Jr. Don't know his rank then. Glad you knew him!
