What small US force in WWII attacked New Ga Island, firmly held by the Japs, doing so with no air support nor artillery support from their ships. They were repulsed for one of the few times.

This small kid tried multiple times to join the military, being turned down by various branches before finally being accepted at about 5’5”. 110lbs. He grew up poor and mostly on his own and learned to shoot game to survive. In his hands the M1 carbine was a deadly weapon.

I don't know that but do know his son was killed by Daniel Sickles in Washington DC for cheating with Sickles wife. Sickles pleaded guilty by reason of temporary insanity and won, first use of this defense in our history. He was the Major General at Gettysburg who commanded the 3rd Corps and pushed his Corps out in front of the Cemetary Ridge line to the Peach Orchard and Wheatfield area. We( McLaws Division) hammered his position at the Wheatfield, Peach Orchard, Triangular Field, Etc.

That’s amazing after an insanity defense.

It was only temporary! :) Gen. Meade , when he heard of the advance, tried to correct it but it was too late. McLaws Division came up and slammed the daylights out of his Corps!!!! Hood's Division on the right of McLaws hammered them too, I believe.

The position he took at Gettysburg was the very definition of insanity. He created a salient that was smashed by McLaws. Cost him a leg too.

Yes sir, we hammered him, of course at big cost. Remember reading of Kershaw getting hammered by US cannon in the Peach Orchard when he advanced between the Rose Farm and the Peach Orchard. Hate it. Love the civil war history as you do. Hate the killing of each other though.

Key had been sent out to the British fleet to negotiate a prisoner exchange. The British agreed to a one for one exchange but said it was irrelevant as they intended to level Ft McHenry. Key advised the prisoners below deck they would soon be freed but followed with the British threat.

Dozens of ships sailed by lobing repeated broadsides into the fort. The Captain advised word was sent to the fort that lowering the American flag would cease the shelling. Through out the night the prisoners asked Key who stood on the deck was the flag still up. At dawn the flag still flew.

Oh say can you see…

My folks were in 2 companys in the 24th Georgia, fought in the Wheatfield , etc. Longstreets Corps, McLaws Division, Wofford's Brigade. UnicoiDawg and myself have a relative (Meaders) killed in the Wheatfield on July 2nd carrying the company flag.
Been there several times. Standing there and taking it in is something else!
