I don't think the Confederacy had the time or the resources for the frivolity of a national bird. If they did I never heard of it. The Eagle was on the Great Seal of the USofA and it was used as a button decoration on many Federal uniforms. The Confederacy subsequently developed a distaste for the symbol of the eagle as is noted in the verse of a song popular in the South after the War:

I hate that nasty eagle with all it's brag and fuss.
Those lying thieving Yankees I hate them worse and worse.

Georgia and many other Confederate state militia units and state units used some part of the State seal on their uniform buttons.

The reason they gave was to remove the military symbolism. I expect the real reason was to humiliate them. This is the same reason that the Nazis had their political prisoners dressed in clothes that were too large and did not allow them to wear a belt.

Not to hijack the tread, but I have three generations of family buried at a church cemetery in Warren county . Birth of one ancestor goes back to 1820, his and other head stones still in good shape. I have been there twice, live in Florida . Still working on family genealogy trying to find a Colonial patriot. Trying to find proof of connection between my Dad's family and Patriot Joel Warren from Warren county.

Congrats on your neat knife find.
