I am using a Hopkins&Allen Minuteman, it has a side hammer and nipple. I use Hodgdon Pyrodex powder& Remington # 11 caps. The problem is caps fail to ignite the powder about half the time and usually when I have a deer sighted in. Anyone have ideas how to improve firing? I suspect moisture is the culprit, but maybe there is a hotter cap or better powder. :banginghe

I changed all of my sidelocks over to a Musket Nipple to fire the bigger and hotter musket caps. I very rarely if ever have a misfire, even in damp weather.

You should be able to find one if you know what size thread your current nipple is.

I shot a Cabela's sidelock for years, never could get pyrodex to light consistantly. I changed to Goex black powder and that fixed the problem.

Thanks TJAY, I now have Musket nipples and caps and will pick-up the powder today (Goex or ffg Goetz). I am going to hunt in your area ( Canton ) Thurs. or Fri.. I will let you know how it turns out.
