A cat showed up at my place one day, he hung around a few days because we gave him food and water. He was very obviously someone's pet cat, not feral.
Long story short, I stopped by a local veterinarian's office to see if anyone was missing a cat and lo and behold, he was on a "wanted" poster in the waiting room.
I called the number and a guy showed up at the house a little while later. He got out of his vehicle, took one look at the cat and immediately started cursing. Turns out it was the right cat, he just had hoped it was gone forever.
He handed me a $100 bill and said thanks from his wife. Then he looked me in the eye and said "I'll give you another hundred if you keep the cat and tell my wife it was the wrong cat if she ever calls, lol". I took it as a joke at the time but the more I think of it, I believe he was serious.
