Hunted back on my swamp this afternoon. I had two does and a fawn come in and hang for a good long while. All of a sudden the fawn spooks and the two does lock up and they are looking up the hill behind me. The mama of the fawn didn't twitch a muscle for probably 5 minutes. I'm thinking OK what's up the hill behind me that they are looking at? Could it be?
They finally all spook and ease on down to the swamp and I figured the show was over because by now it's around 6:45 or so and we're running out of daylight. I heard that slow crunch, crunch, crunch and I knew it was a deer. He passed me off to my left easing down the hill and he was screened by some saplings but I could see bone.
He stopped with his head behind a pine tree and that gave me the opportunity to get my gun up. He poked his head out from behind the tree and I got a 4 on one side count and flipped my safety off. He stepped out right into my crosshairs and it was say goodnight Gracie.
He's a 2.5 year old scrub 8 but I'm out of venison and he'll eat just fine. Good opening day hunt and one of the best in a long time.
