Have you ever noticed how the “Sermon on the mount” ends on an abrupt and depressing note? The house built on sand falls flat. Totally destroyed. Period. End of story. End of sermon. Thanks a lot, Jesus, for the encouragement.
Or is it the end? If you read the story about the two builders through the lens of religion, you will end up thinking about what YOU need to do. If you read the story, however, through the lens of the cross, you will be thinking about what CHRIST has already done.
Apart from Christ, we are all in the category of sand-builders. None of us have been obedient. Our house is in ruins. That is exactly what Jesus wanted His hearers to realize.
Plot twist! This is not the end of the story. It’s just the introduction. The end comes later when Jesus dies on the cross in our place and says, “It is finished!” By HIS obedience, Jesus Christ fulfilled the stony law once and for all. At the cross, Jesus both took the demolition in our place and became the obedient builder for us.
The takeaway from this story is not for us to try harder to keep a bunch of rules. The takeaway is for us to recognize our inability to please God, and then trust the One who does.
The good news is that the issue is Christ’s obedience, not our performance. He alone is the wise builder. Look to Him and be saved. Believe in Christ and know that His performance is credited to you forever.
