Public Land Thoughts - Taking a Buddy from the Marines Hunting

Good Evening,

Asking here for any help on recommendations regarding Public Land that is preferably open for rifle season, not a quota. Either open for the state season or a sign in or bonus hunt in November around the Rutt is when I am trying to time it.

The reason I am asking is a good buddy of mine that I served with in the Marines. He's going through some tough times dealing with some personal issues. He reached out to me and asked if he could come down to Ga and us go camping for a week and hunt and drink some beers and clear his mind while he's down.

I'm not looking for anyone's spots just general Public Land recommendations yall might have where the odds would be OK to at least see some deer and maybe him even get the opportunity to fill a tag or so on something.

Again I am fine with scouting us out our own spots and set ups but I was leaning towards going south of Atlanta to try to increase the odds of putting him on some deer or hogs 1 or even both with us hunting public land.

He lives in MI and will be making the trip down. He said he is wide open and willing to go anywhere I thought would be worth trying. I'm mainly e scouting for now comparing against the regs and dates due to him being from out of state.

I won't have the chance to actually scout in person until the the trip and we get down there.

I'm reaching out on here for any recommendations yall may have from those of y'all south of Atlanta or folks that hunt the Southern areas of Public. I want to do right by him as he is my brother from the Service and I know what it's like to be in a dark place going through some dark times. I want to do what I can to make the week a good trip for him and let him let some steam off and have some fun. I know it's not about the killing and that's perfectly fine but I do hope the guy is at least able to see some game while he's in state for the trip before he leaves to go back home.

In respect for naming out and location burning please Private Message me on here regarding any in depth conversations. My goal is just general wma basics as far as general thoughts no exact coordinates or locations needed just trying to zero in on a wma or 2 that will be open in Nov to focus on e scouting and planning wise for.

My late father was a lifer in the Corps - happy to help where I can if you have any interest in public land hunts in North GA mountains.

The deer are definitely fewer but you can also stand to see a bear. Plus the camping is much better and crowds are a lot less. Plus there are a few good small town breweries if that’s on the menu.

Haven't hunted public in years but perhaps Fort Benning/Fort Moore. Have heard there has been good hunting in the past. Good luck to you both. Will pray for your friend that he finds his way back to a good place.

Thanks Uturn and Slow. Yea I am considering both Stewart and Benning. There's a handful of options that I've seen at a glance skimming through the regs and dates. For places that will be open through rifle season or holding the non quota hunts that will be open. 3 of which have my attention. In the research phase right now as I received the call late yesterday from the guy asking if I'd do this with him.

Stewart is great and multiple lodging spots available.

Close also to multiple decent WMA’s.

Good luck.
