For anyone opposed to the Bear/Dog Hunt scheduled to take place starting this year on Chattahoochee and Chestatee WMAs please try to make time to attend the public input meeting this coming Monday at 7PM in Gainesville. I am not against dog hunters having hunting opportunities, but I am very opposed to the hunt being scheduled in the middle of bow season for all the reasons already mentioned in the earlier thread. Your voice does count. Hope to see lots of you guys there.

It needs to happen. I’m in favor of it.

I’m guessing you missed my point. Why does it need to happen in the middle of bow season?

Cause there ain’t no deer anyway and if there are, your chances of seeing a deer IMO would be better with dogs running around. I like dogs running in the woods when I’m still hunting. The beagle club was next to my club in lumpkin county and they would run deer off their club onto ours. I knew I would see a deer if I heard those dogs barking way over there.

Who said anything about deer hunting? I am hunting bear that time of year and the dog hunt scheduled just two weeks into bow season greatly reduces my chances of harvesting a bear. So once again pappy, why does the dog hunt need to be scheduled just two weeks into bow season? Pushing it back 8 weeks will not have any negative impact to the dog hunters.

So, were folks in favor of the use of dogs not supposed to read your post and not go to the meeting to speak up for the hunts?

You'll have to cut pappy some slack boys. He has a hard time in the hills. Cant catch any trout, cant find the deer w/o beagles. Ya know, just your regular ole Gwinnett transplant..

I’m with Jbogg. The dog hunt does not need to happen during bow season. Doesn’t need to happen at all, but certainly not during bow season.

But if it does, I’ll take my bow down to my old stomping grounds of Dawson Forest and show @PappyHoel how to kill one there.

So far the stupid is running strong in this thread.

Be careful JBOGG! Like talking to a room full of Democrats, you don’t want to get any of that on you..

What’s your point? The purpose of the thread is to encourage those opposed to show up and speak out. I don’t recall telling the folks in favor not to show up. So far the stupid is running strong in this thread.

A thread encouraging all to show up and make their opinion known would be in the spirit of hunters working together and may generate some goodwill with folks differing from your opinion.
I don't bow hunt, I don't own any bear dogs nor do any of my acquaintances, so I will not worry about the hunt either way.

But I encourage all that wish to bear hunt, with or without dogs, in the CNF to make their opinion known to the DNR. Then the chips fall where they fall.

I do appreciate your opinion, but the purpose of this thread was not to encourage Goodwill among hunters, but rather to oppose the timing of a dog hunt that could just as easily be rescheduled with no ill effect to the participants. Since you admittedly do not bow hunt or bear hunt with dogs, it does not appear that you have a dog in this fight. No pun intended.

Not really. The DNR seems to be trying to keep gun deer hunters and bear hunters using dogs apart.

That restricts when a dog hunt can take place.

There are only 3 - 4 rifle hunts on each of those WMAs with most of the hunts lasting 4 - 5 days. Seems like the DNR could easily schedule the dog hunt in between two of the rifle hunts without it interfering with the deer hunters. Better yet, schedule it after the last gun hunt in December or January. North Carolina and West Virginia both have bear hunting with dogs in December.

Bottom line is they could have a dog hunt any old time of the year, but you can only bow hunt in september. I will try to make it down.

It has been decided by local politicians, commissioners and legislators.....it will pass.

I get a feeling this might be a litmus test for future dogging bear hunts. I'd be willing to bet they will cut two weeks off bow season for doggers in the future.

I hope they at least put it during the first of Oct.

Yea, and hardly any bears are killed during those late season. Im telling you this from experience, and from lots of it. Keep in mind, im not against you. It seems that bow hunters, and gun hunters are not killing enough bears. The dnr has determined that we have a few too many bears, they want the herd thinned. The only two ways to effectivly thin the herd is either by baiting, which that will never happen, although i can wish. Or dogging. Dogging is very effective, as long as the bears are on their feet. You cannot find a hot bear track if bears are not moving. The most productive time to find a hot bear track is from june to late october. Like i said , im not against you, im just putting this out there because i know. Im not sure why bow hunting wouldnt be allowed though unless they think there could be some conflict instigated by the bow hunters who get upset because dogs come in on their set up, IDK.
