Remington 700 Blueprinting Questions

Looking to true/ blueprint my first Remington 700 action, anyone know for certain that if I true my receiver threads with a tap mandrel if it would change my thread pitch? Would Remington 700 prefit barrels no longer be compatible with the action after doing so?

Blueprinting will not change the thread pitch, but it can change the diameter of the barrel tenon. Retapping the receiver means removing metal from the threads. A prethreaded barrel won't fit. When I do it the barrel tenon goes from 1.0625" to 1.0725 inches, or an increase of about 0.010 inches. This requires a new recoil lug as well. The new barrel will be threaded to match the required diameter of the blueprinted receiver.

The truing process involves some or all of these functions: rethreading the receiver to insure that the threads are parallel to the bore, refacing the receiver to insure that the receiver face is perpendicular to the bore, lapping the recoil lugs to insure even contact, recutting the face of the lugs to insure that the bolt can be fitted with minimum but adequate distance from the breech face.

The barrel breech is cut with 0.005-0.010 inches clearance from the bolt nose to the breech. I like for the front of the bolt lugs to clear by 0.010 inches so that dirt or powder won't tie up the action.

If you are going to the trouble and expense of blueprinting the action, I would suggest that a "prefit" barrel is a poor investment. If you want the gun to shoot at its potential, thread the barrel and cut the chamber to match exactly the dimensions needed after blueprinting.

Thanks for the response, yeah after reading your reply im not sure its worth it, as I am just an amateur at home tune my own guns type. Without a metal lathe or anything, but yeah the price of the PTG blueprinting kit I'm probably better off going custom action. I just thought it would be a fun little project as Rem 700 actions are very cheap but it sounds like a little more than I can chew at the moment.

I have the standard thread from PT&G that I have used on a couple of rifles. The method Clemson talked about is much better IMO. All I really got by purchasing it was something to true the action face and true the receiver lugs. It will clean up the threads but I seriously doubt the ability for it to recenter the tenon threads if needed. Once I purchased a new 700 receiver and you could see a flat spot in the threads that I don't think the oversized one would have fixed, so that does happen.

That .005-.007 he mentioned doesn't leave any room for an error for stuff to vent. It doesn't start to be able to vent well until .010 IIRC. If it had .012 to start and you had to take .003-.004 to clean it up you no longer have that and may need to re-cut the counter bore to get the clearance or some other method like a replacing the recoil lug with a thicker one like he mentioned. After that you may too much clearance to allow for proper
pre-extraction. Rabbit hole... I'd let a professional do it or buy the custom action. If your considering pre-fits then then look at the ones that you can easily change the bolt face on for even more versatility.

what if i just trued lugs and receiver face and raceways? If I dont use the thread tap reamer i should be good to use standard recoil lugs, and prefits? Just thought of this. Was thinking of maybe remaking a m40a1 and a5 is why I really want to use the rem 700 actions

pretty sure that is the tap mandrel I got to add to my buddy's kit. His has the oversize tap.
you are correct...not sure what I was thinking. the recoil lug may not matter on the prefit since you will headspace it on assembly and more than likely have ample clearance between the bolt and counter bore. I don't have much experience with prefits

If you are looking for true accuracy, why not just choose a Savage from the rack and have it with less work?

Just joking of course but I have a couple that are spot on and I am a lousy marksman.

I have a higher cost Tikka that is pretty much spot on also.

Admittedly, I have worked on the triggers in all of them.

Good luck, sir.

Im with you on the tikkas. And I agree with just buying a better custom action, especially for the cost of the rem 700 action and blueprinting kit. But I just have this weird addiction to buying cheaper rifles/ actions and trying to accurize and tinker with them to get them to shoot as best I can. That's why I got into reloading.

I don't compete but I plan to. But as of now I just thought it would be a fun little project to get cheap Remington 700 actions, and accurize them as best I can. Get them shooting in the .25- .5 3-5 shot group range with the right handload.

good luck finding cheap 700 actions.
Are you in Washington State or Washington GA? The reason I asked is the last clone action I bought was from Kauger Arms out of Hazlehurst GA. It is left hand feed and right eject and it proved to be really nice and is on my 6mm Dasher.

I'm in washington state, unfortunately with their horrible 2a laws lol. But actually PTG has them for about $450 a pop, long or short action, blued or stainless. And 3 different bolt face diameters per action.

Haha i know but I do love tikkas. IMO best hunting rifles for the money in the affordable range. And their lightweight for high country hunting. But also looking into the sig cross's
