Remington 721

I have an older Remington 721. For those unfamiliar it was the model prior to the 700, built in the 1950's It is a great rifle and shoots very well. The stock could use refinishing. I am perfectly capable of doing it myself, but am undecided if to leave it shaped the way it is and just sand/refinish it with a coating like it has or to reshape it a bit and do an oiled finish since that is the type of finish I prefer. I really like the satin oiled finish of a ruger stock and was considering working it to be more like them, etc. Any opinions on doing this. I'm not to concerned with effecting the value of the gun. I will never sell it. It was given to me my my uncle and will forever remain a part of my collection. First, any opinions on what to do with this classic. Second, if I choose to do the oiled finish, what type of oil do I use. Seems like I have seen people speak of tung oil. Thanks for any help.
