It's private property. They should be able to sell it, develop it, or do whatever else they want since they own it. If you're going to lose a place to hunt then find another one.If only had to do with losing a place to hunt iO
There’s not only private property involved lots of folk going to lose personal property to imminent domain to expand infrastructure to support the industrial park. It’s not only about hunting and fishing.

So does anyone know who those who want the state to acquire Pine Log WMA can contact to continue to push the state of GA to pony up and buy the tract?

It was stated at the meeting last night the family is willing to sell the property to the state of Georgia but they have not agreed on a price. Presuming that means family wants X and the state is offering less than X.

With the right ground support this could be a win for the state to acquire a tract of land and keep some wild in GA.

I wonder what the many anti development/anti prosperity folks would do if they had the Hyundai plant came knocking on their door and offered them 100,000 PER acre for their 100 acre tree farm….then what? Dig in your heels and say “naw” or let it rip??? I know the answer…….Govt has no business owning land and choosing to buy it with my tax dollars.

With the land prices now it would probably be a heavy lift to make that happen. It would have been better to do it pre price insanity and Hollywood moving to Atlanta. The best hope now is to possibly identify specific wildlife habitat and buy fractured parcels.

I asked some wildlife groups about this when it first came up. The GA NWTF head was about as useful as what you scrape off your boot. Others were more helpful but most likely pine log will be a parking lot.

You dont know the answer you just think you do. You think Aldo leopold would have sold? What about any of the other conservationists that pledged fortunes to preserve the natural world. By the by, they aint all your tax dollars.

I may speak with some of the youth I coach and see if they want to start petitioning the WMA as the first recognized non-binary WMA that should be protected as such and not exploited in any manner. Perhaps this angle could gain the most groundswell and media support.

Otherwise my boy and I will see who we can start contacting and where research and talks MAY lead. It isn't over until Carnie Wilson sings.

How many of those “conservationists that pledged fortunes” made that fortune by developing or having land developed either directly or indirectly ?

Right, not all my tax dollars…just asked that mine aren’t spent on buying land. As far as knowing the answer to that, I actually do….but different strokes. Govt inefficiency is so much deeper than public land purchases.

I have no love for government, but a hope that we can preserve our wild places, all while respecting property rights and the wealth of our people.

The problem with getting the state to buy it outright is the amount of time it takes to get the funding vs the private sector, even if they wanted to buy it.

Listen i agree. This thing is probably a lost cause. Just a shame is all. Maybe folks can work this out, but it sounds like the wheels are in motion. We could do better as a society if we chose too.

Don't get me started on that one because I can go both ways and if I can't win the argument I can conflate the subject matter. :bounce:

I would advise you and others who would like the state to purchase some or all of the property to contact your GA state House Rep and Senator. Here's a link on how to find the contact info on both: https://www.legis.ga.gov/find-my-legislator

Nobody prevents them to sell the place as currently zoned.

The development of the property is governed by Bartow county zoning ordinances and land use, which is a good thing as you wouldn't want a land fill or an industrial site next to a residential area, for example.

I assume that they want to rezone the property to a) be able to sell the land easier (it's a huge parcel) and b) maximize their profit from the sale. Nothing wrong with that. A property owner has a right to seek rezoning. However, it is up to the county commissioners (in this case there's only one, commissioner Taylor), based on the recommendation from the Planning and Zoning staff and input from the public, to make the final decision to either deny, approve or send the rezoning plan back to the owner for re-submittal with desired changes.
