Ruger American Gen 2

Who makes a left hand bolt gun
Ruger did make the American in a lefty. As a matter of fact they made it in a super sweet all weather stainless compact lefty with an 18" barrel and under 37" overall.
CDNN had em in .308 and .243 on clearance just a couple of years ago for well under $300, If I remember right they were $239. They are out there some where but
Good luck finding one now and Im sure theyve appreciated a good bit. Topped with a Leupold 3-9X33 Ultralight makes for a near perfect combo.IMG_20161228_172933~3.jpg

I bought 2 the same day. A 243 20 inch and 5.56 with the short barrel.

Learned a little more right quick and took the carbine back and got a 223 20 inch so now I get 2 identical except for caliber.

I have shot the 223 a good bit and accumulated some brass. Getting ready to dial in a couple of loads. Got a few different bullets and powders.
Got a big 34MM Vortex Venom 5X25X56 on it. Been a blast so far. 1:8 Twist. It's staying 223, not doing the 223 Wylde thing.

As far the 243, 20 inch and 1:9 twist. It will get the treatment similar to the 223 Wylde. I got reamers and everything to do that throat myself. It's got a SIG/SAUER 3X9X40 on it set to 100 yards with 100 grain Federal. It's going to get that same Vortex if I can stop buying guns long enough to spend some money on a scope.

With some modifications I have in mind, I hope to make this one a long range target rifle or at least develope my cartridge ideas and go with a true "target rifle". I believe the potential is there looking at the case capacity of some if the new fangled "long range" cartridges. Most don't have anything on the 243 except a faster twist rate.

I got a new press a few weeks ago just for these two calibers.

The pic is deceiving. They are identical on the outside except for the magazine well.

Been shooting the 223 a lot with factory 55gr ball. PMC mostly and the odd box or two of whatever is on sale.
It shoots good not to ever had a hangload run through it.

The 243 has only been shot a very few times, one as recently as this past Sunday. (Hundreds of cases and 6MM boolits but been to lazy to load any) The plan was to put a flash hider on both, or at least the 243 because with the SIG Sauer 3x9x40 it's feasable to hunt with it. For that purpose it's good to go. It's close to MOA with 100gr CoreLokt and 100gr Fed blue box. The "missed" shots, I could tell were my fault before looking at the IPad linked to the target.
Call it 1 1/4" at 100. That's as far as I have shot it.

Back to the flash hider for the 243. I meant to switch them out because they don't come with a thread protector. In the dismay thinking about having to buy cartridges at Walmart facepalm: I forgot to switch the brake and hider out before going to the range Sunday. AND I had them and the tools necessary in my range bag.

I'm not hunting with ANYTHING that has a brake on it and both of these rifles are pretty loud.

Right now I'm torn between the original plan of having the VENOM X56 so everything except the caliber would be exactly alike with the 223 and an ATN X60 I grabbed at the show in Marietta Saturday.

I'll put up some stuff soon. (I hope)

But the short answer is they are working out great.

My only complaint is the chamber starts so far forward of the ejection port, it's hard to thumb them in one at a time but it's getting better with practice.

They both feed good from the magazine but when you are used to the Ruger controlled feed on the 77s, every other system except maybe a commercial Mauser leaves a little to be desired.

PS.. The 223 came with a MAGPUL and it will take any functioning AR/M4/M16 mag.

Have you done any handloading for it ?

Subs and a can (y)
Oh yeah. I’ve done Maker 200gr, Hornady 190 FTX, and Lehigh 194s. I think the Lehigh are going to be the ones I stick with.

Got bored today and decided what the went out to Bass pro and bought a new ruger american american gen 2. I own a couple of the first gen’s and love them. Man this thing is sweet! Ruger really stepped their game up on these. Super lightweight rifle perfect for box stand! Anyone else have one or plan on getting one?
Learned something new. Didn't know there was a Gen 2.

I'm getting 2 or 3 more at some point. They are very good, accurate and reliable rifles. Especially considering they cost 550ish to 600ish dollars.

Some company will be making chassis for them soon enough if not already.

The spiraling flutes cover a lot of surface area while staying rigid. They cool pretty quick with the bolt open.

All the Rugers are better now that the barrels are forged in- house. They contracted Douglas and Wilson for barrels prior to 1992. The stopped Douglas in 72 or 73 iirc, then used Wilson until 92.
