Saturday, June 18: Learn to tie the Peacock Body Soft Hackle on The Tying Bench!

Last week, we tied foam spiders for panfish (and for trout). This week, we'll tie a perfect complement to those spiders: the Peacock Soft Hackle Emerger, a great fly for use as a dropper beneath a foam spider!

I've been doing well on sunfish in many streams and ponds using the foam-spider-and-peacock-emerger combo, and I've actually had several doubles (two fish at once) while using the two together. We'll not only talk about how to tie this great fly but also about how to set it up as part of a two-fly rig!

I think you'll have fun tying and fishing this neat little all-purpose emerger!

Materials:

Hook: Nymph or wet fly hook, size 12 or 14, regular or 1XL

Bead: Silver or gold brass (NOT tungsten) bead suitable for the hook size you are using. Do not go too large with the bead, or the fly will be too heavy. Alternately, for a somewhat lighter-weight fly, use a clear, gold, green or red glass bead.

Thread: 3/0 or 6/0 black or olive

Ribbing: Fine gold or copper or silver wire

Body: Three or four strands of peacock herl

Hackle: One or two turns of a mottled hen feather.
