Near the georgia-Florida line lie"s a treasure that has eluded man"s search since 1815. The treasure was lost by seminole indians who had promised britain they would fight the americans for six pony-loads of gold coins. At the end of the war of 1812 a colonal nickols of the british army had lured the seminoles into war with the united states, Though they hadn"t needed much urging because americans had forced them from their homes in georgia, the seminoles wasted no time carrying out their end of the bargin With the help of two british officers, known only as armbrister and arbuthnot, they killed every american they could find, The deed that finally provoked president jackson to retaliate was the seminoles defeat of any army detachment, They killed every man in the column as well as the women, and children were travaling with the soldiers for protection. President jackson was enraged and orderd the tennesse army to chase the seminoles into the ocean if possiable. Unkown to colonal nichols at the front, By the time of his deal with the seminoles, the americans and british had signed a peace treaty. This left the seminoles out on a limb. Without the aid of britain, They didn"t stand a chance against the americans. The outnumbered seminoles lost the first battle with the tennesse army and had to run or be killed. Pushed hard they left behind the gold coins that colonel nichols had given them. With no time to bury them they simply threw them into a swamp where they sank out of sight. When the retreating indians reached the town of ST. Marks, They saw a reassuring sight-the british flag flying high on the mast of a ship in the harbor. This was to be the final error in the simonoles short war with america. The ship was an american vessal that flew the british jack to lure british ships into firing range, Chief himollenco and two of his braves went aboad the ship only to find themselves in american hands , The two officers colonal nichols had left with the seminoles were captured and hanged. In the late 1800"s some simonoles came to search for the gold that had been thrown into the swamp, The only information they had about the treasure was handed down from another generation. The owner of the land gave them permission to search but nothing was ever found. In 1900 claude yarbor bought the land where the gold was dumped and drained the swamp by digging a ditch to a nearby creek. Still the treasure remained hidden. Years later the search resumed by another owner who had also bought the land because of the treasure. By now the land had dried even more, After countless holes, They found coins, Three of them, All made in the early 1800"s. The men figured that the gold had settled deeper into the ooze of the swamp. As fate would have it, before they could dig deeper the sky turned and rain came down in torrents. It lasted for five days, after which, to everyone"s surprise, the swamp had returned.Defeated the men gave up search. Today at the bottom of the yarbors swamp, about a mile from the georgia-florida border, lies a treasure of untold value. The location is is close to the chatahoochee river.
