short barrels on a shot gun

The hardest- recoiling firearm I've ever shot was a pump shotgun chambered for 3.5 inch magnum loads and a buddy brought out a pack of turkey loads to the range for us to try.

The shells cost a few bucks per shot and we only fired three rounds each but it definitely kicked the snot out of me.
Not fun.

I think the strongest recoil I have felt is a .458 Lott in a #1. I can shoot 3.5" a good bit with a recoil reducer ...not sure I have ever shot 1 without a reducer...3.5 #6 turkey loads are a good hornets nest

I have a 20 and a .410 that will kill a turkey out to 40 yds. If I do my job that’s plenty and I go home with no purple shoulder. Plus it’s a lot lighter to carry for an older guy.

No need for it,IMO. The 3” 12ga,with proper load + choke will kill out to 60 yds or so. That’s about it,for ethical Hunting/shotgun kills..in my experience. The 3.5 is too much for me,and makes me want to cringe/flinch when I shoot…it’s like standing still..waiting to get punched by Mike Tyson :)

I just ran one of Federal's Tungsten turkey loads through a recoil calculator:

Projectile weight 2.25 ounces = 985 grains
Powder charge = 50 grains???
Muzzle Velocity = 1200fps
Shotgun Weight = 8 pounds

Recoil = 81 ft/lbs

Recoil of a .458 Winchester Magnum in the same weight gun = 62 ft/lbs.

and, the recoil of a rifle is not as sharp as a shotgun...

Probably closer to 25- 35 grains of Powder. Shotgun uses relatively fast burning powder. Won't affect recoil est that much though.

I impulse bought a Charles Daly 12G single shot that weights 5.2#…

Added a Limbsaver recoil pad and had SumToy customs work me up a mount and add a choke tube.

Haven’t shot it yet, I’ll probably roll with Sattie’s 2 3/4 TSS shells. I couldn’t imagine the wallop a 3 or 3.5” would be in a 5# gun hahaha

** Not pictured with Sumtoy’s choke or mount**

My son uses a .410 Rossi Tuffy Turkey, with a red dot, and 7.5 tungsten.

His last bird came in too quickly at too close range. He got it with only one pellet at 10 yards!

Tungsten shot is a complete game changer.

I've recommended to many people to get Apex #2 Tungsten Shotshells to have with them anytime they are hunting with a shotgun.

Your are legal for anything for from doves to ducks, to turkey, to coyotes, and they will kill a big hog at 100 yards. (Not legal for deer and bear.)

Just don't waste those $12/per shot loads!

I have a double barrel 12 with 6 inch barrels.
It's a black powder muzzle-loader Diablo. Fun to shoot, but not much good for anything else.
