Some excerpts from "if" verses.

But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

If you love me, keep my commands.

If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.

If you believe, you will see the glory of God.

If you remain in me and my words remain in you.

If indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end.

We will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

If you hold firmly to the word I preached to you.

Thought I'd add one "but."

"But the one who endures to the end will be saved."

But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
For me, this is a most interesting tenant.
It is consistent, also, with "The Lord's Prayer" (i.e., ".... forgive us our debt/trespasses, as we forgive others...").
Yet, when i accepted Jesus (et.al. : ),
the promise was filled,
right then & there,
that all my sins
(past/present/future, known/unknown by me, of commission/omission = all)
were forgiven at that very instant.
Beyond that moment, will i continue to sin? Sadly, yes, & for sure.
And... beyond that moment:
I want to know of (& even pray asking God to alert me...) my sinful ways.
I am to humbly confess said sins.
I am to repent, for sure.
I am to, & certainly want to, incessantly
thank God for having already
(i.e., at moment of my accepting Jesus)
forgiven me for all these sins.
Question followed by my best guessed at Answer:
Q.: Why am i apparently instructed to ask for forgiveness a 2nd time as i might gather from both above examples (i.e., 1. "But if you.." + 2. Lord's Prayer).
A.: This is instruction that was stated before Jesus had actually been crucified for my sins. Prior to Him having done so there had not yet been payment for my sins and it was still necessary to request forgiveness for each sin.
If i ask for forgiveness beyond that point that God states that He already has forgiven me ...
it is i pointing out to God that
i did not take His promise that
i was forgiven of all my sins at the moment of
my accepting Jesus as having taken on all my sins
as not true ???
