Think we (humans) will actually "see the light" and voluntarily change our destructive behaviors or......
we will just get smarter/better at dealing with the negative results of that continued destructive behavior?
Example - burn up earths resources so populate another planet (kind of like locusts). Didnt fix the behavior, just invented a way around it.

I think the latter. Seems to be the pattern. Mess up n move on. Not to say that everyone is like that always. Just generally. The trick to that though is staying ahead of the flood at all times. We may get caught one o these days. All that said i do believe that there is hope to change peoples minds and behavior, and to do that you have to show em another path.

Speaking of onions, lately everywhere I shop they are out of sweet onions! I'm not picky - they don't have to be Vidalia - any sweet onion will be just fine. But I can't find any sweet onions except in a huge bag of them, and I can't eat them that fast. What's up with the sweet onion shortage?
Ingle's had plenty a few days ago. I picked up a three-pound bag. I think it's mostly the time of year. Local Vidalias won't be out for another month or two.

Of course not, but it could be part. I'll listen to the pitch.
The pitch is thus,
Have you ever considered that freedom, independence, and environmentalism are all connected? What if just to start people looked to provide more things for themselves? What about a garden instead of a lawn? We could build on this idea and walk a gentler path. The trouble is the average person will not find this worthwhile until the need is in their face.

Yes freedom, independence, and environmentalism are all connected.
However large-scale agriculture, "civilization" and greed are all connected.

Another way to think about this is what works on a small-scale for a family or tribe does not work for what the world has become, due to Homo Sapiens being way more "successful" in the evolutionary game than anybody could have ever imagined. As we all know, almost everything is a double-edged sword. Our curiosity, inventiveness and high-octane intelligence in general has enabled humans to survive and infest the planet like a box of ants dumped in a sugar warehouse. But human brains are a package-deal, and our human propensity for tribalism, greed, jealousy, paranoia, and self-centeredness have ended up working against our own best interests as a species. That's just the way things are playing out for our species.

But this being the AA&A forum, before anybody says "this is why we need God!" let me remind everyone to read the Old Testament with an open mind - focusing on God's wide variety of His own (often self-proclaimed) very suspiciously human character traits. I'm not saying that Abrahamic religions are a painfully obvious case of "the blind leading the blind" but it does certainly seem that way to me. Again, just my personal opinion.

This is why it is important for those that can to lead the way by example, not force. People will almost always push back against a forced change. They need to see whats possible, and more importantly why its better. All those things you mentioned are the same things that keep bad actors in check. Our intelligence allows us to see our mistakes and correct them. Our creativity allows us to think of possible solutions. Right now civilization is on a sugar high. We've never had access to such a huge supply of cheap energy to power our lives, and someday the free ride will be over. But we can stop before it comes to that. It takes people willing to try. Thats it.

Have you seen Konstantin Kisin's talk at Oxford Union? It's kind of inspiring. He implores these very privileged, very intelligent, very woke kids to put their energy into inventing solutions to problems instead of useless "slacktivist" protests.

That being said, if someone can turn bugs into steak I'd check it out.

In general, I agree with this, but change has also come from active resistance to improve laws towards justice. Sometimes people are forced to change, kicking and screaming.
