Sweetgums

For whatever reason I have a very low percentage of finding squirrels when my dogs tree on gigantic swamp sweetgum trees. I noticed this weekend while looking for the squirrel they have budded out. That got me to wondering if the squirrels swapping over to a diet of green tree buds had something to do with my struggles. Gums dont usually have a vine to instigate movement so I am largely dependant on my binoculars when checking the tree. I wonder do they just timber over to eat the buds and sun and eventually move on while leaving my dog enough scent to wind and tree. For what its worth Ive hunted with some pretty good dogs besides mine and they are comparable when it comes to accuracy. Thoughts?
