The Articulated Super Woolly on this Saturday's edition of The Tying Bench!

Big fish like big flies with lots of movement, and this week's featured pattern -- the Articulated Super Woolly -- has plenty of both!

The Articulated Super Woolly is an articulated and upsized version of the much-loved Woolly Bugger. It adds an articulation joint to give the fly its wiggle. The "ASW" has proven to be a good pattern for big browns and for hungry bass too. We are sure you'll enjoy tying and fishing it!

In this session of The Tying Bench, you'll learn how to create durable and highly mobile articulation joints -- something you'll then be able to use to add movement to many other patterns too -- and also how to tie single- as well as double-hook versions. Then you'll put that new skill to work tying an Articulated Super Woolly of your own!

Materials list (note that you can vary the colors of materials depending on the type of minnow you're trying to imitate):

FOR REAR PORTION OF FLY--

Rear hook: Size 8 Woolly Bugger-style hook

Thread: 3/0, black or match body color

Rear tail: Black marabou (vary color of this and other materials as desired)

Flash: Several strands of silver or pearl (or other color) flash on each side of the tail

Rear underbody: Small black thread-core chenille

Rear hackle:
> Feather option: Black or grizzly woolly bugger hackle or strung hackle.
> Hackle yarn option: Black hackle yarn (with or without sparkle). Suitable materials include UV Polar Chenille and Senyo Aqua Veil Chenille as well as other similar materials.

FOR FRONT PORTION OF FLY:

Front hook: Size 6 Woolly Bugger-style hook

Bead: Brass or tungsten conehead

Thread: 3/0 black. Use strong thread.

Articulation connection: Nylon-coated 19-strand steel wire, 0.018 or larger. Suitable wire materials include Surflon, Rio Wire Bite, Beadalon, and so on.

Spacers: Two or three large glass craft beads. 6/0 beads usually work well. Other bead architectures, including a single larger plastic bead, can also be used. Color? I like to match the overall color of the fly...or use clear or red/pink.

Lead-free weighting wire (optional)

Front tail: Black marabou

Flash: Two or three strands on either side of the front tail

Front underbody: Black thread-core chenille, small

Front hackle: Black hackle yarn or black or grizzly feather, as used on rear section

Legs: Silicone or elastic leg material, black (or other color)

Dubbed collar: Red dubbing with a hint of flash (the red dubbing we made last week is ideal!)

TOOLS YOU WILL NEED:

Wire cutters for cutting the steel-core wire and for trimming the hook off the rear section if you are tying a single-hook fly. Don't try to cut this material with your scissors...they will never be the same if you do!

Dubbing wax

A few rubber bands

(And if your tying vise has a bobbin cradle, you'll find a great use for it as we tie this fly!)

FAVORITE COLOR SCHEMES

> All white with silver or pearl flash
> All black with black, silver or gold flash
> Tan with gold flash and yellow and/or orange accents (to imitate small brown trout)
> Olive or green with green or gold accents (to imitate small sunfish)
